Is it me or do mountain goats just look weird if you don’t life size mount?

I didn’t mount the first one, decided to mount the second but olnly took enough for a pedestal/shoulder mount.

Been looking online and just can’t find a good look.

Any examples of a good pedestal or shoulder?

They sure ain’t sheep and I’m really second guessing this. Full body, hard to beat, everything else is depressing.

Can’t argue with a full body mount, but I really like rugs as well. I have seen some pretty cool 3/4 and shoulder mounts, but I don’t have any. I’m thinking that will be my next billy mount. Oh, and if you’re looking to do something on the cheap, a good cape makes a really nice throw blanket as well.

These are all ones I’ve saved over the years that I didn’t mind. None are my pictures, just a few photos I’ve saved after searching for ideas. This one, is how I did one of my goats that I did not have made into a rug.

The one Justin posted is alright, the others I don't really like the look. I just don't like that cut off look or a goat coming out of a cave appearance.

Internet photos can look good, but when the goat is actually on the wall, it's weird, it's like the hair is so thick, and puffy, that it makes a shoulder mount look wider than they are long if you will so they just look off.

I agree the rugs are pretty cool but costly as well.

The one Justin posted is nice...my dad has a couple that are just straight shoulder mounts from the 80s and they don't look horrible.

Half mounts are the worst looking mounts for any animal pony up the extra couple hundred and get a full body. rugs are ok as some family members have them. When I shot my Tahr in NZ there was no question I was getting a full body mount as shoulder mounts and half mounts look like hell.

AK,

That looks great. I wish I would have done that with goat one. I just gave it to the taxi for trade. I only have half a goat now, so I guess I could make a rug like that as a toilet seat cover. Outhouse?

How about this? Only costs as much as it costs to get it tanned, and super warm as a throw blanket.

Gregg, did you sew anything to the back of the hide? I think with one of my black bear hides I was going to do the same thing but had thoughts of sewing a nice fleece blanket to the back. Just curious on your thoughts.

If I killed a big billy I would full mount forsure. Unfortunately in my hunt I hardly saw any goats. I ended up killing a nanny. Figured a nanny is better than tab soup after 14 years of waiting. Although I don’t like half mounts Im thinking pedistal wall mount like the one I posted. But I agree nothing beats full body for goats

I did a wall pedestal on a goat, while the taxidermy was not the quality I wanted the look is my favorite. I’m may get another one done just because of the bad quality job on the other one.

I did a half mount bear this year and love that look as well.

That was my plan when I did this. I even went out and bought all the special stuff, hand tools, micro fleece, etc., to do it with but in the end, it just seemed like more of a PITA than what it was worth. I'm not a seamstress by any means and I figured that I would just screw thing up. It's also pretty heavy like it is and even though the fleece would feel nicer against the skin, the only time we use it is when were hanging out in the cabin sitting around reading or watching TV in the winter time, and have clothes on, so it's never against bare skin.

So another option, although it's not what your asking, would be to sell it to a taxi and use the $$ to pay for the hunt, or another hunt. I did that with one from a few years ago. I took the entire hide out, thinking that I would be able to sell it to someone that wasn't able to salvage their hide, and someone that wanted a full body mount. I ended up shipping it down to a taxi in WA. that just wanted enough for a shoulder mount. After shipping, I ended up only netting $450 for it, but it was worth it, and paid for most of my bush flight.

AK, both mine were local goats, but I get what you mean. I stopped mounting stuff years ago then I arrowed a B&C ram and I went ahead an mounted it as a pedestal, and it turned out crazy good. Haven't mounted anything since but have the last goat in the Taxi. Kinda wishing I could pull the plug now. but it will be my last. Goats just don't give you much too look at i.e. Euro mount.

Stevo, don't take this the wrong way, that is a great mount, and quality, but it shows exactly what I was trying to explain above. The mount seems fatter than it is long (nature of goats) and just looks off compared to that kick ass ram.

I guess goats are just different but a full body somehow how negates the look I'm trying to describe perhaps due to the full body length of the goat vs just the shoulders forward.

I've always liked pedestal or wall pedestals instead of flat wall mounts to bring critters back to life. It's also possible to add rocks and vegetation that brings out memories of the area hunted. Nothing beats life-sized but it's often tough having the space and LS are SOOO expensive! I'd rather use that $ for trips!

In recent years, taxidermy suppliers are coming out with more and more forms that offer more shoulder and different turns. Taxidermists can always customize a form but it obviously takes time and money to do this.

I'm SUPER picky with taxidermy work...it is definitely an art! Taxidermy is getting so expensive (especially for top quality)! I've gotten to the point that I do my own fish reproductions and am starting to do my own turkeys and big game. There are amazing videos available to get a guy started. This will likely be something I will do a lot more of once I retire!
