Give your self defense carry gun a test every once in a while….

In my last CCW renewal class, there were 12 people. Myself and one other person were the only ones that shoot our edc weapons regularly. At least three people hadn't shot since they got their permit two years prior. I shoot a couple times per month or more if my schedule allows. I will typically run 200 hundred rounds through each of the Glocks that are on my permit. I give them a quick cleaning once I get home. Bore snake, a little brake clean on the metal parts and compressed air.

Ive never had a malfunction when I practice with my pistols, but I am always blown away by how much I suck at shooting them.

Same. I have to shoot a ton to stay proficient, which was easy when going to the range was a matter of a quick stop on my way home from work. Now it’s 45 minutes away, and I pretty much don’t have time to be proficient with a pistol so I don’t carry one.

To be honest I carried a pistol on me any time I left the house for 4.5 years (when I moved to Wyoming.)

After doing some real practice last winter, I have since stopped carrying all the time and reserve it for when I'm with my family or going somewhere I think I need it. I also added bear spray back to my bino harness and carry a pistol AND spray.

Sorry to side track. Back on topic.

Shoot at least 100 rounds every quarter with the 19x I keep in the truck. Or at least as many as it takes to go through my 2 dialing trees and 3 steel targets at least twice. Sometime sit takes more than I want to. . Then alternate another 50 from either a p365 or Bodyguard 2.0. I seem to carry the bodyguard more than the 365.

yeah, I guess I’m the only one surprised at the question. Do people just not shoot their edc/self defense guns very often? Every other weekend after I’m done shooting rifles I run about 100-200 rounds through my handguns.
This is a crazy thread. You only shoot a weapon you defend your LIFE with a few times a year? Why bother even carry it in the first place.

So now you’re guessing when you’ll need it?

My XDM 4.5 that’s been collecting dust in the safe the last few years is the same way. I took it on a deer hunt a couple years ago assuming everything was okay. It had never had any malfunctions in the 10+ years I’ve had it. I never did discharge a round during that season, and it wasn’t until the offseason that I discovered it was suffering from light primer strikes. Either striker or recoil spring is the issue, this is a good reminder I need to fix that! On my daily carry I try to discharge a mag or two of target rounds to make sure things are operating well. Trust but verify!
