Give your self defense carry gun a test every once in a while….

In my last CCW renewal class, there were 12 people. Myself and one other person were the only ones that shoot our edc weapons regularly. At least three people hadn't shot since they got their permit two years prior. I shoot a couple times per month or more if my schedule allows. I will typically run 200 hundred rounds through each of the Glocks that are on my permit. I give them a quick cleaning once I get home. Bore snake, a little brake clean on the metal parts and compressed air.

Ive never had a malfunction when I practice with my pistols, but I am always blown away by how much I suck at shooting them.

Same. I have to shoot a ton to stay proficient, which was easy when going to the range was a matter of a quick stop on my way home from work. Now it’s 45 minutes away, and I pretty much don’t have time to be proficient with a pistol so I don’t carry one.

To be honest I carried a pistol on me any time I left the house for 4.5 years (when I moved to Wyoming.)

After doing some real practice last winter, I have since stopped carrying all the time and reserve it for when I'm with my family or going somewhere I think I need it. I also added bear spray back to my bino harness and carry a pistol AND spray.

Sorry to side track. Back on topic.

Shoot at least 100 rounds every quarter with the 19x I keep in the truck. Or at least as many as it takes to go through my 2 dialing trees and 3 steel targets at least twice. Sometime sit takes more than I want to. . Then alternate another 50 from either a p365 or Bodyguard 2.0. I seem to carry the bodyguard more than the 365.

yeah, I guess I’m the only one surprised at the question. Do people just not shoot their edc/self defense guns very often? Every other weekend after I’m done shooting rifles I run about 100-200 rounds through my handguns.
This is a crazy thread. You only shoot a weapon you defend your LIFE with a few times a year? Why bother even carry it in the first place.

So now you’re guessing when you’ll need it?

My XDM 4.5 that’s been collecting dust in the safe the last few years is the same way. I took it on a deer hunt a couple years ago assuming everything was okay. It had never had any malfunctions in the 10+ years I’ve had it. I never did discharge a round during that season, and it wasn’t until the offseason that I discovered it was suffering from light primer strikes. Either striker or recoil spring is the issue, this is a good reminder I need to fix that! On my daily carry I try to discharge a mag or two of target rounds to make sure things are operating well. Trust but verify!

I have an XDM in 10mm with a light and red dot that I keep on the night stand. Occasionally I use it for backup when hog hunting too. I like the power of the 10mm and the high capacity of the XDM. I am planning a trip where i will take it with me so I decided to take it to the range to see if the red dot is still on.

To my surprise, the first two rounds did not fire, there were light primer strikes. I pulled the slide off and found that the firing pin seemed to be gummed up. I gave it some oil and got it working but took it home and field stripped the slide. The firing pin was not that dirty, but i guess there was some old oil or grease on it that made it sticky. I cleaned it up well and lubed it but will make sure I test fire it a little more often. I think it has been a couple years since the last time I fired it. I'd hate to really need it and it not fire.

So, test your carry guns occasionally to ensure they function well and are ready when you need them.
This is exactly why I replaced my XD pistols with Glocks. Had it happen more than once.

I don’t want a safe queen that I have to keep in pristine condition. Never had that issue with any of my Glocks, even under much worse conditions.

Don’t your firing pin assembly. The entire channel should be intentionally cleaned/dried. Also if gummed up parts is something you’re trying to avoid, NO FROG LUBE!

Glocks come from the factory with some kind of red grease in them that the manual says to not remove. I've both left it and removed it and never noticed a difference. Sig recommends greasing the slide. It doesn't take much. I used light weight calcium grease on the slides and locking blocks of my autos when I carried metal frame pistols with full length guide rails. With glocks, ATF everywhere, wipe it all off, good to go.

The biggest problem I have is lent. That stuff works into everything. I'm always appalled at how much gets inside of my pistol. A little bit of lent in just the right place and no pistol is going to work well.

This is a good thread to remind folks that basic maintenance has a purpose. How it has become such a trendy thing to avoid is beyond me.

Excellent thread for the intended topic of maintenance as well as a reminder to shoot more often. I quit archery hunting when I wasn't proficient at shooting my bow and wasn't putting in the time. I don't feel like I can "choose" to quit carry my CCW so no choice but to maintain proficiency.

I'm sure I'll be in the minority here, but I think that's a respectable decision.
