I’m plus/minus on the educated coyote. I think it happens a lot less than people think. They just use as an excuse when they strike out.

This guys probably heard old “pound town” a time or ten.

Been working on some bad sheep killers for a bit.

Watched a pair drop into this draw three mornings ago glassing. I made a move on them than, never got a response. Par for the course these days.

Decided I’d just come back and set some traps on them the next day and get them gone. Didn’t think I was dealing with my killers as it’s 5.5 miles away. Possible, but not as likely.

Next day was in the area to set some traps and low and behold found a den.

New game plan.

Snuck in this morning in the dark, had the wind, the sun, the topography. Should have been a slam dunk.

As soon as I did some puppy squeals I caught this guy zipping over a hill 450 yards to the east. Last I saw before he got defilade in the bottom he was coming right at the sound. Well, he took a left turn down there instead and went for our wind.

He started threat howling immediately down wind of my position about 700 yards.

Again, par for the course these days.

I sprinted a few hundred yards to the next hill, it had a pretty good military crest so after what felt like a miles worth of low crawling I was able to just see his top line. 360 yards ended his shenanigans.

Thing is, I don’t think he smelled me. He went right for the wind, and with the SW wind this morning he SHOULD have smelled me where he died, but the thermals 1/2 way down that draw were going upstream almost straight south. He got down there expecting to smell no doubt a human, and when he couldn’t his next course of action was to immediately just threat bark the female out of the area.

Ten, certainly 15 years ago I’d have NEVER shot this male in this situation. I’d have backed out, gave them a day or two, and come in again, closer to the den, a different angle, later in the day. But you used to be able to work these situations repeatedly until you had the female. Of course, pre thermal era a guy could go into this type of situation and had both adults in his lap in about 15 seconds and probably shotgun both of them.

Not anymore.

Anyway, pups are taken care of. He’s gone. Females still at large. If she doesn’t pop smoke and head out we’ll pick her up in a trap soon enough.

Found these pups last night after the wind finally died while glassing for deer.

Made a plan to come in this morning and deal with them.

Set up 680 yards from where I’d seen them. Did some soft puppy squeals. Waited about 8 minutes and was just about to do some louder sounds when I caught this broad sneaking in using every little crease and fold in the ground and ground cover she could.

She got in to about 300 and layed down in some cover watching. Had I not watched her get there I’d have never known she was there.

After a 30 minute staring contest she decided she’d seen enough and started slinking out just as she came in.

Had a heck of a time getting a clear shot at her but finally got her to stop at about 420. Had to make a hasty shot sitting but it worked out.

Sat another hour looking for her man and never saw a thing.

Ten years ago this was rare behavior. It has become normal.

Use a motion decoy upwind 75-100 yards. Its the best way.

Not necessarily. If they are called to, a lot, when coming-in, they may be wary of a motion decoy, and turn and bolt. I've stopped bringing it anymore. Just shove the X24 chest-height into some bush that gives me the best places off to one side of cross wind to over-look the FOV.

Also? Stuffing the eCaller chest-height.. when they come in? They then stop for a second to then raise-up onto their hind legs as they try to pin-down where the sounds are coming from.

This buys you glorious extra milliseconds with which to execute the shot.

80 degrees by 7 am.

Luckily I had my killing done by 5 am!

Snuck into a spot with the intention of just trying a locate than glass.

After throwing out a locate sound and getting no replies I had been glassing for a little over 15 minutes when this gal started threat barking me dead down wind 450 yards.

Even with her barking it took a minute to spot her in the cover (who’s got two thumbs and is sick of this freakin sweetclover?!?!).

Once again, 7-8, 10 years ago this was somewhat abnormal behavior that is now an every day occurrence.

And again, I believe it directly relates to the night hunting thermal crowd.

I've read their night vision is actually pretty good so it may help on the ones we haven't spotted yet that are observing the field before coming in.

Same here, but on a night with a bright moon they can see really good, so we’ve been running a motion decoy by the call and try to set our tripods in a shadow out of the moonlight.
We had some hang up and act funny on bright moon and starting bringing the decoy, honestly I try to not go if it close to full moon., we just haven’t had as much luck then.
I’m pretty convinced there is a lot of luck of right place at the right time with coyotes, yea you can call them from a distance but maybe they are only active for a few hours a day or something?

I ended up picking up a refurb decoy and have had pretty good success with it if coyotes and foxes are nearby. Hard to say it’s directly because of the decoy though
