Nope, it's been done for 25+ years and has been field tested with thermometers and cools just the same as game bags and keeps the meat fresher, no dry crust on the outside. Saran wrap breathes just fine why do you think it's food grade and people use it everyday in their kitchen.

There's no way that a plastic sheet "breathes just fine." It's impermeable. It doesn't create a crust because you are preventing water vapor escapement. You wrap things in saran wrap to prevent it from drying out in the refrigerator.

I'm not saying it does not work for you, just that your statement is contradictory.

I’m picturing myself trying to hold a quarter and wrap it with Saran Wrap. Don’t think I’d ever try that.
That's where my tripod made for this purpose (and others) comes into play can also just hang the quarter in a tree while I wrap.

You tell me, about 12 hours cooling + or - I'm not looking for the meat to crust it's wasteful trimming. We've done the same tests with game bags and cooling is the same other than the quarters in the game bags will crust and stick to the bags. My processor even told me this year after taking them my Bear, Moose, Elk ( I did my deer)in that they should be wrapping them in Saran wrap too, best looking meat he had all year.

@Overdrive that's a cool idea with the tripod. I wasn't sure how you were managing to wrap your quarters. It looks like you do a great job with your meat care.

I'm guessing that the saran wrap is thin enough to allow the heat to escape, but I don't believe 'breathable" is the term I would use.

Yes I think that might be where I was confused too, after thinking about I could see it cooling off fine. I just not sure I want to trap all that moisture inside. It seems it is working for you and looks like you got a great system down.

You got your system down 👍. Have you done any temp testing in archery season? Do you see the quick cooling even when the outside temp is warm?

I can't take credit for the tripod, my friend invented that and builds them. Top Hand Tripods

As far as cooling goes the best thing we have found is taking the knee joint apart (even when using game bags) it seems to act like a chimney and lets the heat escape. I haven't noticed any excess moisture when using Saran wrap and I've let the meat age up to 14 days before while wrapped. With Saran wrap it is easy to let blood drain, if it pools up in the bottom I just poke a hole and let it drain then a quick wrap and it's covered again.

I was skeptical at first when learning this method 15 years ago but my friend has been doing this method for at least 25 years. He has tested the heat all times of the year from hot Septembers to freezing November hunts with good cooling results. That thermometer pic is the temp at the bone with a meat probe.

I'm not against game bags I know guys will continue to use them, I've just found this is a better and cost effective method without the extra cleaning of bags after use.

Make sure you're using Saran wrap or food grade wrap, any old plastic wrap that isn't food grade will cause spoilage
