After doing some reading on the blowing plugs deal I am not sure I want to deal with that. There is no way to prevent it and being out away from home and having a plug blow would really suck. At least with the breaking plug issue of the '04-'08 I can have them replace them for me before I buy.

Good way to look at it in my opinion. The shop I use will Helicoil all the plugs if they have a customer that fails one. Their reasoning is that they will likely be doing a plug replacement for the customer, and the urge them to solve the problem for good at that time. Maybe worth the question to the owner of the 2001 you mentioned, if this has been done?

The broken plug deal doesn't bite you until you go to change them. But if it has over a 100K make sure you find out if they have been changed.

Again either way the F150 in any of the years you mentioned is a good truck

Knock on wood but I haven't had a plug break yet. The PO changed them at 60k and I've had them replaced on mine already. If one does blow, just disconnect the injector on that cylinder and drive it to the shop. A friend of mine had one blow on his V10 and he drove it from Phoenix to Tucson that way. No issues and his engine has almost 300k now.

Why?

Very little aftermarket, limited slip differential was awful off road, power was ok, etc.

I just bought an 2015 and like it much better.

06 f150 owner here and this thing has been a money pit.
Plug issue as mentioned
Cam phasers as mentioned
Love eating hubs (esp 04-05)
Steering shaft seized
On my 4th set of upper balljoints
On my third rebuild of the limited slip in the rear
Also whistles in cold weather...dealer told me it was a characteristic of these trucks
There is a fuel pressure sensor above the spare tire that rots and the truck will just shut off while your driving.

I own a 2002 f150 supercrew with the 5.4L 164K miles. I had one of my spark plugs blow out while up archery hunting this year. Had to tow it back to town and have the cylinder drilled, tapped, and a threading bushing put in. cost about $400. Truck runs great though, I pull a 2014 27ft keystone passport trailer with it. 5,000 lbs dry weight. I also had the blend door issue but I replaced it myself, It took about 6 hours of labor from start to finish to pull the entire dash to get at the blend door but It only cost me my own labor and about $32 in parts. Overall i like my 5.4l f150 and will probably by a newer one in a few years.

Ended up with an '11 F-150 with 70K miles. Wife just didnt like the idea of buying a higher mileage truck. Merry Christmas to me I guess.
