Florida hunting?

What kind of work? Have you considered Tampa and north? Ocala area is 30 mins from gainesville and less than 1 1/2 hours to Orlando. Also lots of public WMAs along the gulf coast

Can you hunt WMA? You can’t here in CA, there usually small and surrounded by houses.

I’m a general contractor, know how to do just about anything residential. Commercial not to much.. but I was more looking into getting into a union job. Guarantee decent pay, benefits, going to try to have a family in the next few years and CA is not the place to do it. We were looking into Gainesville last night actually and are considering going down that far.

I want to say thanks and I appreciate you answering everything. I know there was a lot, maybe it’ll help out someone else one day.

If you’re a competent contractor there’s work all over Florida. There’s people retiring here every day and houses are being built and remodeled constantly. Just about anywhere is going to have work for you. North central Florida might be a little slow but everywhere else is growing. Canaveral north along the east coast , north side of the I-4 corridor to Tampa , central Florida Ocala area all have work and recreation for you. The Ocala NF runs right up through the center of central Florida and basically runs into the Oceola NF which runs up into the pinhook and that runs into the Okeefenokee swamp in Georgia. There’s WMAs scattered through the area also. There’s many thousands of acres to explore. Then there’s the Atlantic and Gulf to fish along with thousands of ponds and lakes and rivers. Anywhere surrounding that central Florida area will put you within an hour of something great to enjoy outdoors.

Yes.......not much union work unless you know somebody. Iron workers and IBEW are only unions I know of. Lots of WMAs are open......Ocala NF, Goethe, Jumper Creek etc. As others have said, very swampy area and crowded. Other WMAs have quota hunts drawn by lottery. Like Shrek said, work is everywhere right now. Last I heard was 900 people a day moving into Fl. Im swamped with work right now. We are booked out 2 monthes. However, Im also very gunshy and cautious from 2008. When (if) it crashes again we get hit hard sorta like Vegas.

I just did a little research and that’s what it says. Not much union stuff except for niche jobs. I’ll have to do some job searching long before I come out. Always been a general out here, the cost of living is just so outrageous and I don’t think CA is a good place to raise kids. Not where I’m at.
What line of work are you in?

I’ll have to drive through Ocala if I have time just to check it out and see what’s around. Sounds like I got a lot of up coming trips across Florida and SC coming up soon.

I own a Landscape company. We do the tail end of the construction process both residential and commercial. I try to judge my future by the amount of land clearings ahead of me and there is no shortage or signs of slowing down at this time. Good luck in your search. Lemme know if I can help in the "redneck riviera" part of Fl.

You can make a very good living as a general contractor in Florida if you’re competent. Finding good help is a huge headache and understanding how to manage money are key. Some contractor friends went bust in the 2008 crash when they got caught holding spec houses and had all their cash tied up in them but others went to cash at the first sign of trouble and have continued to do well. How well ? They can afford very large homes , drive new diesel F350’s , and have 30’ plus Yellowfins and Contenders they fish offshore. The competent part is key though. I know others who struggle to get by and go from one crisis to the next. I’m just letting you know there’s money to be made here if you know how to make money. Lack of work isn’t the problem.

That to me sounds like I’ll do just fine, I am young. But I had my dad help me with money at first; and I’ve built around 20 some houses out here... bad part is my dads the one making all the money and I’m sitting here making crumbs. He trained me, and is taking full advantage of it. He makes a great living and I’m living paycheck with minimal to save.
There is a backstory to all this, but long story short I don’t like where I’m at and I’m unhappy. So I feel like it’s time to turn the page.

I lived in the Panhandle growing up, most of my family is still back there. Lots of opportunity for hunting/fishing and work. The hurricane last year created lots of job opportunities for anyone that is willing to get after it

Isn’t the deer rut later in the panhandle? Like Jan. or Feb.? Was looking at one of the military bases for a late rut hunt before I left FL.

It was always hard to pin point due to weather but yes it's generally around Jan. We hunt a lot of woodlands/swamp area and you know the deer are rutting but the activity is harder to see compared to deer in the western states. We've killed deer dawging does though. What base are you looking at?

When I was looking at it in 2016, I believe it was a late primitive hunt at Eglin.

If your looking at moving to Florida and Hunting is important I'd say northern FL near the boarder. Gives you lots of options for hunting FL, GA and many other states near by.

I'm not familiar with that hunt or area but I could do some asking around. There's areas I could point you towards that you could find deer, hog, and turkeys.
