How about Jacksonville? Anything worth hunting within an hour or so drive? I’ll be relocating next year and this could be an option.

There’s plenty of public land within an hours drive. There’s also land to lease. Deer and hog hunting is much better than down south Florida. I and most of the hunters I know hunt in Georgia on leased land. We form clubs to lease the land. It has its pluses and minuses but the hunting is just so much better. Once you get north of the Okeefenokee swamp by about 20 miles you hit agricultural land and the deer hunting is exponentially better. The problem with most of Florida is that it’s mostly sandy pine flats which are food deserts for deer. You drive through and everything is green but there’s very little nutrition there. It’s deceptive.
Quality of life is much better in the north Florida area than south Florida. People are much more friendly. Cost of housing is much lower. Much of the population is non native here also but we seem to attract a better class of people moving into the area. I’m way over Florida personally but I can see the attraction for someone coming from the cold and insanely crowded areas of the country. It’s still insanely hot here in the summer but our fall , winter , and spring are pleasant to outright glorious ! I was trading weather forecast over text with a friend who lives in Montana this winter. I’m sending forecasts for clear with a low of 50* and a high of 65* and his is negative 19* with a high of 0*.
Since I’m singing the positives of Florida I’ll include the no state income tax. Sales taxes do run 7% but food and medicine are not taxed. If you don’t buy a home along the coast the homeowners insurance isn’t too bad but buy in the coastal zone and the flood insurance and homeowners will be higher. There’s a lot of Florida natives moving up here fleeing south Florida if that tells you anything.

I’ll add that once you get north of the I-4 corridor you are getting into old north Florida and it’s nothing like south Florida which is a shithole imo. If I was choosing a place to live in Florida and really liked to hunt and fish the panhandle is where I’d be. It’s way better all the way around imo. I’m from Key West originally but I’ve lived in Tallahassee and Jacksonville for my adult life. I still have family down in Key West and south Florida and spent summers there but I quit going back in ‘93 because it had lost all charm to me. Now I’m down to one uncle and a cousin in Key West and their moving to Ocala this year sometime. More distant relatives in the West Palm area are moving out also when they retire. Everyone in my family wants out.

I’m a general contractor that’s only 25 but have been doing work since I was 17, and full time since 18 (in the field) and have been a full general for 2 years. So the only thing that stresses me out is I have to be somewhat close to a major city cause I either want to flip houses or be a building inspectior

No offense to anyone, but is it where the Dominicans go is down south when they come over? I’ve heard that’s s big problem down there abs by no means am I trying to be racist or cause drama. I just heard that’s a big problem in the southern part

South Florida is where all of South and Central America along with the Carribean flood into. The Haitians and Dominicans certainly bring a different lifestyle with them.

Yeah I’ve heard it’s a pretty routy area in the keys area into Miami areas. My fiancé wants to go central/south and I wanna go north so I guess only way to find out is to visit and drive the areas. I like the thought of Jacksonville. Should be work in a decent size city but close to out doors areas to do what me and her both like

Are you fluent in Spanish ? If not then you’re going to have trouble working in South Florida.

I don’t speak Spanish but I know Spanglish. I’ll have to take a trip to both south and northern Florida, see what works like out there and see what she has to say. With the people I associate with all have said they don’t like it much there. I’ve heard it’s similar to LA where I work now and I don’t wanna do that again.

It’s very similar to SoCal but worse climate. If you or your fiancé like beaches then Canaveral north to Jacksonville have decent beaches and the northern gulf has the best beaches. Cape San Blas to Pensacola has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Funny you say that, she just said she is going to look at those areas and check it out. I guess there will be work anywhere in the US If you look hard enough

If you’re coming from the People’s Democratic Republic of Commiefornia you will be blown away by the freedom and attitude of central Florida north. No ; you don’t have to register your weapons , it’s a shall issue concealed carry state. The tax burden will me much lower. Just please don’t bring anything California with you !

What’s the pig hunting like? Can you bait them? Hunt year round? I’m willing to trade good deer hunting for good pig hunting. I just need something to get me outside often

On private land (hunting lease) they’re considered domestic animals and you can do what you please whenever and however you want. Pigs come and go on areas. Feeders are legal for deer also on private land. Public lands have regulations and seasons and feeders are banned. Georgia is the same. You can hunt pigs 24/7/365 on private land.

You have to be seriously hard core to hunt anything after May until the end of September around here. The heat , biting flies , and mosquitoes are horrible when you get into the woods. I don’t bow hunt anymore because it’s just not any fun due to the listed issues. You can wear a bug tamer suit but sitting there sweating your balls off with the roar of mosquitoes that are trying to eat you isn’t my idea of fun. Go fishing ! There’s endless fishing options. There are hundreds of ponds back in the NF and miles of rivers and creeks. Then there’s inshore saltwater fishing and offshore fishing. Inshore saltwater fishing is most enjoyable during the winter and spring imo. If you have never encountered biting sand gnats you are in for a treat. When the breeze dies inshore it becomes miserable quickly. Offshore is expensive but way more enjoyable during the summer. There’s an endless supply of outdoor recreation to explore between the NF , rivers ,Springs , inshore and offshore fishing , and freshwater fishing. Get in with a dog club and chase coyotes and hogs year round with dogs.

Something else to keep in mind is there is basically no spot and stalk hunting around here. It’s either climb a tree or a place to sit on the ground. Visibility is extremely limited due to vegetation and flat topography. There was a thread about baiting somewhere and someone asked what we all did before baiting was legal. Dog hunt ! Trying to find the deer or hogs without either is tough. Now that tracts of land big enough to dog hunt are getting few and unaffordable everyone has switched to hunting feeders on smaller tracts of land. Florida is thick ! Everywhere is green. You can see across a clearcut for a year and that’s about it. By the second year the pines are as tall as the deer and the hogs are completely covered within a year. One of the things that bothered me when I was stationed in SoCal was everything was brown and it never rained ! I was used to everything being green and it raining just about every afternoon from late May to September. Doesn’t rain long , just twenty or thirty minutes during a thunderstorm but it’s very regular.
