He went 147cm and the scale said 41kg. So for you imperial guys 58” and 90lbs. I don’t know if he was really that heavy or not, it was just a hand held scale but that’s what it said.
It was just me and the 4 year old trolling five lines 60km out. He took a blue and white ilander with a ballyhoo under the skirt off the shotgun. I had about 70 yards of line out when he took it and 900+ yards of braid on the reel. When it went off I took the rod and drove the boat, my little man cleared the other four lines. He peeled off straight out the back of the boat at warp speed. I’ve never heard a reel scream like that before or since. When I had half a spool of line left I though, I must be hooked on a boat because this can’t be a fish. No boats in sight moving though so must be a fish??? He didn’t slow down and soon I could see the spool coming through under the line and I thought, this things going to spool me. I need to turn and chase but for some reason my brain wasn’t getting my body engaged. I had about 30-40 yards of line left on the reel when it went from full speed to a dead stop. I started cranking and turned the boat toward him. He didn’t take another run, I brought him straight to the gaff. When he was at the boat I saw a second one with him just as big but I didn’t have a live bait rigged to throw it or another guy big enough to throw it anyway so I gaffed this one and brought him in.
We get several a year as bycatch trolling for marlin but never seen another one that big. I hope one day to beat it. Most are like this
Bloody good sashimi though. The wahoo and yellowfin are my favourite bycatch.
