I've been taking my son hunting with me for 2 years now. He's seen success along with a lot of failed attempts . Turkey hunting , deer hunting , paddle fishing , etc. Where I go , he goes, if he chooses. On our last day of paddle fishing this year he looks at me and says "Dad?" I want to go turkey hunting before I'm 5 years old. " I said no way I'd leave my little buddy home. Then he says , "No" I want to shoot one !" I thought about that statement for a little bit. My initial instinct was to say "Your too young." Then I replied , I tell you what . You prove to me that you can shoot , and shoot accurately to where you won't wound one and I will take you hunting . This boy didn't skip a beat . He wanted to practice shooting every night after that. To my surprise he shot really really well. No flinching , great form, payed close attention to all that I was showing him. After several sessions I had seen enough. I spent the next 2 weeks scouting public grounds in search of an appropriate set up for him . Hard work paid off . He not only got 1 mature tom , he got 2 . One spot we had to boat into and set up a blind . The other we had to pound the pavement and get some miles under us to find the birds . Both shot opportunities were 100% clean head shots. The river bird was 16 yards , the second tom was 28 yards . Both birds were shot utilizing a tripod to hold the gun. 100% unassisted . Im very fortunate to get both of these hunts on video. No hunt I have ever been apart of has brought me greater joy than these two. Thank you Nebraska !
For those who are interested . He was shooting a Tuffy Turkey 410 Shotgun. Federal Premium TSS#9 . His grandma made the sitka outfit he was wearing ( because he insisted on matching dad ). There is no minimum age in Nebraska for a youth to shoot turkey just as long they are under the supervision of a licensed adult .
