Finally, some jail time.

So, if that’s the case, what’s your proposed punishment?
Unfortunately, the courts are bound by the laws already in the books, and they favor the poacher. Stiff prison time would have to be changed in the Legislature, but that will never happen. That’s why this keeps happening.

30 days in the local jail doesn’t deter anyone.

That’s manifestly untrue. That little itty-bitty misdemeanor sentence deters the overwhelming majority of people in our society. The fact that it doesn’t deter some short-sighted young men with undeveloped frontal lobes and some determined criminals does not mean it doesn’t deter anyone.

Would you risk going to local jail and a criminal conviction for a trophy buck? I sure as hell wouldn’t.

These guys got what they deserved, but what they received seems much harsher than the Studer case. Which to me was way more involved in blatant criminal activity.

Agreed, but Karl Studer is a multimillionaire so he’s got that going for him with the criminal justice system.

Studer took how many elk and a moose out of unit 54 and got no jail time and only 5 years lost hunting privileges if I remember correctly? Not that I find any less value in mule deer personally but if they are going to use the draw odds for the place to justify the punishment most of unit 54 elk tags are 2-3% and a moose tag is less than 1% odds down there so Studer should probably be serving a life sentence

That big bank account definitely helped him out. I think he ended up with only 1 count, which was the moose.

That judge seemed pretty dialed in on the nature of what these guys did, and what it means to other hunters. Explicitly made the point that it's a unit that can easily take 10 years for someone to get drawn for. Also...he looks like a hunter, for some reason. Very happy to see him hammer these guys.
