Field Knife and Butchering

I use a wiebe replaceable blade knife (similar to havalon) and for blade replacement the pliers on a Leatherman works well, you won't cut part of your finger off that way

I have tried a bunch of stuff. Fixed,folded,replaceable.....and these are my favorites to actually use. That benchmade became my favorite fixed.
The gerber is hard to beat for the money. And the other tool isn't a must but it's light and is so much faster for me to open a hide. 20260109_104722.jpg

I use different knives depending on what I'm doing. A homemade one for general use, a Mora Guardian for just gutting if I'm taking the deer to the processor, and a Victorinox boning knife if I'm doing the work at home.

I'd recommend a thin bladed Magnacut steel knife, and use a Siembida Field Steel to touch up the blade.

I used a new North Arm Lynx in magnacut for the first time this year. Super impressed with the edge holding ability. Field dressed 2 whitetail bucks, skinned them, quartered and deboned both and it’s still hair shaving sharp.

A couple years ago I switched from my big heavy buck knife to a havalon Piranta. It was a great little knife, but I hated the blade replacement. I always felt like I was going to stab myself, especially with bloody hands. I also had an incident breaking a blade while I was seperating a joint. Shortly after, I switched to the Outdoor Edge RazorPro. They use larger more conventional blades and are WAY easier to replace. However, The folding part sucks. meat/ fat gets stuck inside all the nooks and crannies and just makes a giant pain to clean when I get home.

I am looking for a fixed blade that is light and does not use the havalon blades. I am contemplating switching to a regular blade with a sharpner, mostly because I typically never have to swap out a blade during a field dressing, I swap when I get home, and typically use the edge for processing/ deboning. Any recommendations or experience making the swap from replacement blades to sharpening
The plastic blade remover from havalon works great. Also use the 60A blades, the are more durable and don’t snap as easily.
