Whenever people who know better try to appeal to people who don’t by trying to give them a product they guess the fictional average dude wants it comes off tone deaf and disingenuous. Federal managed to make an innovation and fail to innovate. Backcountry hunters make up a small percentage of hunters but we sure spend a hell of a lot per capita and it’s money you’re after. Make it a 7 arc with 7mm-08 ballistics in a 4.5 pound mini action as a compromise to marketability.

I would not be surprised to see a 6.5 ARC in the future.

I fully understand everyone's skepticism, but I just built a 280ai that I really love and is shooting awesome. That said, it is 9lbs fully rigged and loaded and has a 24" barrel. Not an issue for sage flat hunting, but high alpine and elk hunting in the alpine, it's length and weight isn't ideal with my suppressor on it.

I had planned to build a second rifle in 280ai with a shorter barrel and MDT carbon stock for those hunts, but was not stoked about the velocity loss.

That weatherby 307 with the MDT collapsible stock (if it comes with a 20" barrel) seems like a perfect option in this round. I am not shooting a hunting rifle at animals 1K yards, so I do not need the same weight and size scope as on my 280ai, I also don't need to do a ton of load development to likely get 1 moa, which is perfect for a hunting rifle, so factory ammo is fine.

I also won't be burning through barrels and worse case...I can have it re-barreled in 280ai down the road. I am shooting 155 to 165gr bullets out of the 280ai with a 1:8. Being able to shoot 170-190gr out of this for elk, moose and bou is a good match.

Feels like this will be a good hunting rifle cartridge and I appreciate the effort to try something new (steel cases and 80K).

I’ll never own something with that level of recoil and don’t shoot with anyone who would either. I handle and shoot recoiling rifles fine I just don’t see why. There are 1500 yard elk lethal guns that kick half as much and if this season is any indication I need to be whole hell of a lot closer than 1500 yards.

That said, if this case design is truly reloadable, I would love to magically turn my 6.5 creedmoor into a prc or an arc into a 6 creed. If federals lab tested reloading procedures are reasonable that is where their money is. Any firearm chambered in a modern cartridge would be fine. I understand not making 30-06 cases available due to the huge number of rifles chambered that would explode. But a new line that includes the creedmoor and prcs etc…

I would think unsupported case web, primer pockets, bolt thrust, the primers themselves, and throat erosion would all be in play.
Maybe some existing cases, actions, ect… wouldn't handle the high pressure well.
Might also be that some current powders dont either. And some overbore rounds might not play well.

Pure speculation, but Im thinking there is more to it than put it in a steel case and step on the gas.

So it’s basically a nickel plated steel case 7mm loaded to 80k psi. The biggest take away is the number of actions that can support such pressures and what that means for the vast majority of cartridges going forward.

smith..its documented there were things killed at a 1000 yards.....with a 45/90 and a ladder sight. Many things killed at that range and further with the scoped 30-06. I'm willing to bet there are plenty of people that can kill anything with an 06 at any range just as well as you can with whatever pea shooter you are hanging your hat on. The 06 is just fine. Nothing fudd about it.

Careful, you'll trigger the pudd's that go small caliber.

I'm excited about the 7mm Backcountry but as everyone is saying I'm most excited about the technology. If we can get a little more horsepower out of smaller packages that perform better in short barrels I am 100% on board.
Agreed. Just like Hornady's Superformance, if Federal starts coming out with Peak alloy casings for increased performance with other rounds, I'd love to see what my stubby .308 will do!

I hope this gen 1 is moderately successful. Then by gen 3 or 4, there will be a 6mm that can push a yet to be developed 128 gr high bc bullet 3300 fps out of a 10" barrel. The barrel will have a 6" integral suppressor. This will go along with a future change in the NFA to exempt any suppressor that is a permanent part of a rifle.
Costs nothing to dream...
