It's not glamorous but I have an older 111 in 30-06. I am going to keep it a 30-06 even though it gets no love around here. Anyway, I've seen the ER Shaw kit to re-barrel a Savage. Does anyone have any experience with these? This is my first rifle rebuild and will be the basis of an all around NA hunting rifle.

Chiming in on the caliber. I know you were just kidding, but Nothing wrong with the 30-06:) That's the caliber I picked for my birthday rifle last fall.

What's wrong with the factory barrel? My early 90s savage 110 30-06 consistantly shoots 5 shot group around 1/2" with hand loads

^^^this. I also have a 90's Savage 110 in 30-06 that shoots phenomenally. This trigger is awful, but even so, it's one of my most accurate rifles. And personally, I love the 30-06 cartridge, I have had great success with it.

I was just poking about the 30-06. As far as the barrel goes, I have 3 Savages other than this one that all shoot better. The reasons Im messing with this is two fold. I want a project and this was the first rifle I ever purchased with my own money 15 years ago so it'll always have a place in my safe.

These reasons I can relate to. I just finished up one rifle project and all it did was make me start thinking about another one:)
My Savage was also the first (centerfire) rifle that I saved my own money to buy.

I have not done this myself, but I would not hesitate to do so. I would suggest going to midwayusa and reading the reviews on shaw barrels to get an idea of quality. My friend is building a semi custom rifle right now and he chose an ER Shaw barrel. However, I would encourage you to look into higher quality barrels from Pac-nor (my favorite), shilen, and a few others. It will cost more, but you will get a more accurate and easier to clean rifle. You would also have the ability to tailor the barrel profile to change the balance and overall weight of the gun if you want to (stock modifications may be needed). I would also consider replacing the trigger if needed.

Good luck on your project and let me know if you have any other questions.

Check out apache gunworks for your new barrel he can set it up exactly how you want with barrel prices from very affordable on up. He is currently doing a 6.5 saum ss barrel for my model 16

McGowan precision is a great barrel and they sell Savage pre-fit barrels as well. I just bought a Savage .30-06 varmint contour barrel off of an eBay seller that I'm hoping shoots as good as it looks. Just need a complete bolt assembly now.

The Shaw barrels definitely shoot well. But you can also have Shaw fit your action with a barrel and eliminate the nut. They charge about $100 to put it together and test fire it but its well worth it. The barrel through them is about $200, so for $300 you can have a solid rifle without a wedge nut.

I've got a ER Shaw barrel in .338-06 on a Mauser action that routinely shoots under half inch groups. The Shaw barrels get pooh-poohed on internet forums all of the time because they don't cost a ton of money, but that rifle shoots better than I do! I'm all for having great equipment, but I'd be willing to bet there's not many folks on this forum who could shoot so well in field conditions, they could justify the expense of a high end barrel. The Shaw barrels are plenty accurate, and a good value too.

It seems like people who actually try the Shaw barrels really like them. I once saw someone talking about how Shaw barrels are never on the line at benchrest competitions and in the same thread the next guy said, yeah that won't work for my hunting rifle then...

a lot of benchrest competitive shooters could be classified as "clinically weird" too (no offense meant)..... and you won't see "many" 338/06's or 270 WSM's or 300 RUM's at benchrest shoots either ..... ER Shaw has been making barrels for LONGER than most "barrel makers" have been shooting guns - My next custom barrel WILL be a Shaw barrel for sure

What twist rate did you get on the 6.5? I know some say that can matter a lot for that caliber especially.
