Equipment versus practice posts and Rifle practice/shooting

Plan to get out and shoot this again sometime in the next week. I've been playing around dry firing different seated supported positions with the pack up front but I really think I prefer shooting off crossed poles. Are you guys managing to get poles unstrapped from the pack, set up and get shots off in the 20 seconds? It just seems like it's gotta be impossible but you don't know what you don't know. Guess I need to come up with a way to keep the poles from sliding out so I can run through it dry firing in the shop.

Nah not for the hunters drill. Just sit on your ass & shoot off your pack

I tried this today with a full pack and bino harness.
Full disclosure in 45+ years of hunting I have never used a bino harness. I timed out of a total of 6 shots. The first time removing the pack I felt like Tin Cup

Took me 10 seconds just to get the straps unbuckled and sit down. Certain parts didn’t like moving that fast.
I would rather look like a monkey playing with a football now then when it matters.
This is going to take some work to hit the time limits and score in double digits.

I do need to lighten the trigger on the practice rig. I really notice it on the off hand and unsupported shots. Feel like I am slapping the trigger like a shotgun.

what magnification do most shoot the drill with? I suck at this. I’ve been trying with 6x

Haven't done the drill but more magnification amplifies the wobble you see and you have to be really disciplined on the trigger. Don't try to drive the scope to the target, let the wobble happen, break the shot coming into the scoring ring, not on the way out.

2nd time shooting the drill. 13/20 and happy with it. My first time was single digits and really struggled with unsupported. Did a ton of dry fire practice and much improved.

My prone is lacking but that should be an easier fix and get me around 15-16 with some more work. I felt confident on the prone shots but I clearly need to slow down on those. My ammo is only 1.5moa in my 10rd groups so any additional user wobble will be outside the circle.

Great practice and the timer adds great pressure that I haven’t dealt with before.

If you're referring to trekking poles/quikstix I don't know why you'd have them strapped to your pack.
Unless in very steep downhill I just leave them together and use as a single stick, ready to deploy as necessary.

Something that increased my speed in getting out of my pack was replacing the sternum strap buckle with the one in picture. ( I don't buckle the waist band)
I have old beaten arthritic hands and have a devil of a time squeezing those stupid little tabs on the regular buckles even in the house at room temp, let alone when hands are half frozen to the point you can't even undo your pants to take a pee. Just grab the strap and yank.

The same buckle is on the GunBearer.

Haven't figured out how to incorporate it to my pants zipper yet.

For those that use the D.F.A.T. close focus adapter for dry fire, here are some targets I made for practicing the Carl Ross hunting drill.

All targets are sized for 12' as per DFAT target standards. The 7, 5, 3, and 2 moa white dots are for the drill. The elk are roughly sized to the distance listed below them.

These are the same imaged, but sized for different mediums as listed in their filenames. One is to be printed on a 8.5x11 paper. The other is sized for a gen 8 iPad (9.8x6.8").

This is my first time making my own DFAT targets as I've always used the targets that came with the kit. That being said, it's my first time so there could definitely be an error. I have only used the iPad version and the measurements seem correct on that one.

I'll probably make another one soon with whitetail.

Enjoy.
