Elk Rifle Suggestions

Will it kill Elk, certainly, if you do your job.

IMHO, I spend a lot of $$ to go elk hunting. I don't want to find myself in a position, with light dimming, last day of the hunt, and a great bull walking over the ridge at 500....and me with a CM.

I would rather using something a bit heavier for when things get a bit tougher

So you don't have any personal experience?

There's plenty of dead elk in the 6mm and 6.5mm threads.

I have a friend whose late father killed over 40 elk with his Savage 99 in 250-3000. Favorite bullet was the factory 87 grain soft point. If he can do it, a 6.5 Creedmoor with modern bullets should be fine out to reasonable ranges.

I'm sure it would work fine but that doesn't mean you can't optimize by picking up a new rifle in a caliber of your choice....

Depends on how much compromising you want to do. There are better choices where there will be less or no compromising. I use a 7PRC and 175 eld-x. Good to go for any shot angle and way out there, if need be, without excessive recoil or weight.

Certainly. How many folks post about passing up a shot due to uncertainty. Number of wounded animals? Apparently that never happens.

As I stated, and apparently you took offense to, it will certainly work...if the shooter does their part and keeps things like range to an acceptable number

I happen to really like the CM. Currently have 4 of them. Doesn't mean its the first choice for a particular job.

My 416 would work well for groundhogs, doesn't make it the best choice.
