Elk Rifle Suggestions

Will it kill Elk, certainly, if you do your job.

IMHO, I spend a lot of $$ to go elk hunting. I don't want to find myself in a position, with light dimming, last day of the hunt, and a great bull walking over the ridge at 500....and me with a CM.

I would rather using something a bit heavier for when things get a bit tougher

So you don't have any personal experience?

There's plenty of dead elk in the 6mm and 6.5mm threads.

I have a friend whose late father killed over 40 elk with his Savage 99 in 250-3000. Favorite bullet was the factory 87 grain soft point. If he can do it, a 6.5 Creedmoor with modern bullets should be fine out to reasonable ranges.

I'm sure it would work fine but that doesn't mean you can't optimize by picking up a new rifle in a caliber of your choice....

Depends on how much compromising you want to do. There are better choices where there will be less or no compromising. I use a 7PRC and 175 eld-x. Good to go for any shot angle and way out there, if need be, without excessive recoil or weight.

Certainly. How many folks post about passing up a shot due to uncertainty. Number of wounded animals? Apparently that never happens.

As I stated, and apparently you took offense to, it will certainly work...if the shooter does their part and keeps things like range to an acceptable number

I happen to really like the CM. Currently have 4 of them. Doesn't mean its the first choice for a particular job.

My 416 would work well for groundhogs, doesn't make it the best choice.

I do not own a 6.5 CM. My elk experience is with 308, 270, 300 WSM, 270 Wby and 30-06, having killed elk with all of those calibers. I've also seen a couple drop with a 7-08. However, I've hunted with folks who have killed plenty with a 243, and a 6.5 CM, as well as the story I mentioned of the 250-3000. My best estimate is that I've killed around 30 elk and have seen another 30 go down or right after they dropped.

My experience: elk die quickly when hit well and go a long ways when hit poorly. Caliber is not as important as shot placement and good bullet performance.

No offense taken. I just don't buy the wounded animals/shot selection/shooter does their part thing. Those apply to all cartridges at all ranges.

You still didn't address whether you have actually used it on an elk and what your results were.

I’ve got a custom rifle action sitting around and I’ve been toying with the idea of building it out into an ultralight 7 PRC
