Elk Etiquette; Does it Exist?

I've said it once I say it 1000x, I would rather hunt the most marginal habitat than deal with people.

I firmly believe in the 90-10 rule: 90% of the problems are created by 10% of the people. And most of the people I meet out on trails or parks fit into that pattern, but I would still rather never see or hear or smell another human (outside of my own party) when I am out hiking or hunting.

My worst encounters have been with non-hunters and landowners. Usually the guys out there working to do the same thing I'm doing are on the same page as me.
My actual worst encounters have been with some outfitters. They've tried to bully us out of a camping spot and a hunting area. Tried to call us into the forest service for bogus, made up stuff. They also purposely ran me and my horse off the trail when we met head-on.

Yeah, I've seen some of that Chit too...outfitters acting like they own the forest.

yea im on the 90% of the interactions ive had with hunters have been fine/great. 10% maybe bad, some guys really are just there to be jerks, was at a parking area with some hunters talking to me while we were all glassing the day before season, talked for awhile and after the fact found out one of them was nice enough to throw their used tobacco chew pouch into the back of my truck into my open sleeping bag..... really stand up dudes. Hope Karma skunked them that season.

Other hunters ive run across in the field? Totally fine, stop and talk a bit, wave at each other, share information, all around totally great interactions. One morning i pulled up to the parking spot and another hunter had just turned off his truck ahead of me, it was a big area at the top of a mountain, we talked for a little bit and then all of a sudden as shooting hours were coming on a bull bugled probably 150 yards downhill from us.

I asked him if he wanted it he said nah, go for it, i ended up in a fantastic bugle match and called that bull in on top of me but he came in from a point i didnt expect him to and winded me. Still grateful to that dude for passing the opportunity up to me, it was a cool encounter.

I’ve killed a lot of elk, but I can’t remember it ever being really fun. Elk hunting is hard, then you throw a bunch of morons into the mix? I’ve sat there in the backcountry asking myself is this worth vacation days more than once.

I drew a good tag this year, but I still expect your typical elk hunting.
At least you dont have to deal with deadfall in Wyoming like the rest of us peasants. Good luck.
