Elk and Deer Rifle for the Wife

The 7mm-08 is a great caliber for the situation described. It often comes in a light package, ammo is widely available, flat shooting, and with limitations of course, is decent elk medicine. My son recently took an antelope with a 140 gn partition handload and I'd have no reservations about putting him in front of an elk with that load.

it's a darn fine and too often underestimated cartridge - after beating myself up this last week fine tuning 4 elk rifle loads for "the boys" I find myself penciling ballistics for a 7mm-08 without realizing it ! shoot a 180 grain from a 5lb 10oz rifle and HELLO !! but shoot a 140 grain from a 5lb 4oz rifle is just another bump on the shoulder - Kimber Montana's ......

I always find the "wife, girlfriend, son, daughter" rifle question very interesting. Dad/husband/boyfriend always needs a thumper, but the tendency is to dial it back for them yet expect them to hunt the same place and animals.

Moral of my story: The best golf lesson I ever had was from a female pro that basically told me to "swing like a girl, not a gorilla"

Food for thought.....

Yup, for sure - it's called testosterone :-) Gotta have the biggest, baddest rifle on the hill :D

I don't have a "thumper" biggest is an '06, but the 6.5 CM has me thinking twice about carrying the '06, not due to recoil, but due to light weight gun, short, easy handling barrel, cheaper to load for etc...

I was wanting a Montana Creed really bad and think it might be the best thing going pound for pound. Had to pull the reins though and went with a 270 since I gave up reloading. lotsa good factory creed available but went with a sure thing.

Plus people hate 270's which makes me like them even more.

Lot's of good options have been mentioned. I've been thinking about this for my wife and eldest boy and recently picked up a Kimber 84M hunter in 6.5CM. Handles very nicely and is light, 6lbs 13oz with scope mounted. It's a bit jumpy due to the light weight when shooting off the bench but it's quite a bit easier on the shoulder than my BLR in .308 win. I was very close to getting that rifle in 7mm-08 and I think I would have been very happy with that as well. I also had considered a Sako Finnlight in 260 rem or 6.5x55. Just more $$$. I got that Creed shooting good with 120 GMXs and 143 ELD-Xs. Excited to see how it does on game.

Me too. I always like to tease my buds who shoot 7mags and larger for deer. Every time I kill one I look over and say 'whew! Just barely enough power for that one. I should really think about getting a bigger gun'

Glad to know I'm not alone on the .277 cal.
