Build vs buy? Hub vs mid drive? Single vs multi speed?

I’m Contemplating an e-bike purchase and I don’t know a whole lot about them. I live and hunt from NY to MD, so terrain isn’t crazy steep. I’m 235, maybe 20 or so pounds of gear…

I guess the biggest thing is, what should I AVOID? And is it Necessary to spend $3000+

Go with Mid Drive the handle the torq better in the mountains and last longer then the hub drives. Also Multispeed is easier on the drive system then just a single speed. I would buy from reputable company over build if your not handy or just want it to be fixed instead of fiddling with it.

You get what you pay for. I picked up a Biktrix Juggarnaut in 2018 and its been a work horse for me. Bafang Motors are some of the best out there. https://www.biktrix.com/collections...clkid=6e46a1d555211d24d60ac5761741e9a6&page=1 Lots of versions they sell these days. You can pick your poison and what you want to spend. Biktrix is a canadian company who has been great to deal with and they have even sent replacement parts for small things and not charged me a dime. Do your homework on the companies out there. Ebikes are a blast but you can definitely get taken for the wrong kind of ride if you get in with a company that does not know what they are doing.

A quality pair of boots is a lot cheaper and significantly less douchey…

How insightful…. Would you consider a disabled combat veteran or any other person with disabilities or amputations douchey for using an ebike to help with continuing hunting or prolonging their hunting years?

Trying to actually answer your question and be helpful. Don’t listen to the true Kunts in this conversation. I don’t use or have an ebike. But I know people that used rad rovers and really liked them but their customer service and problems have apparently gotten worse over the last year. Averton makes the adventure and it’s supposed to be a pretty solid ebike. So maybe look into those. The new one is under 2k, the original is on sale for around $1,400 currently. Otherwise finding a solid bike frame and a defang motor and building your own is another option.

Gotta just ignore the riff raff man. Aint worth even responding to them. I provided some good info for him. The rest of the comments take it with a grain of salt.

And I have good boots and a 5k Ebike and love to ride it along with my Trailer to pack my gear in and out =) No difference from an Ebike and a Quad except you cant hear the Ebike going down the trail.

Something that I've noticed on some of the land I access is that ebikes are explicitly banned, so I'd look into that before investing any money in one. If you have reasonably flat land a mountain bike might be good enough

I have a M2S that I like. Pretty much the same as a Bakcou mule, but less $$$. It is great to cover a lot of ground quickly and quietly, but you do need to understand where they are allowed and where they are not. I only use it on private land, they are banned from KY WMAs and most forest service.

I just built a bike with a 750 Bafang and 52v motor and a few other upgrades. Wasn't an expert before and definitely still not one now but I know a few more things. Youtube is a great resource, Johhnynerdout.com is where I bought my kit from and his videos on YouTube are great. If your a little handy and enjoy the DIY stuff (I do) then I would say build your own. You get a lot more bang for your buck that way. My buddy bought a juiced bike and he really likes it. I actually found a mongoose fat tire on FB marketplace and bought it before my kit arrived so now I plan on putting another kit on it down the road.

Go see if you can demo some somewhere. And when ya finally find what ya like - try to find someone that bought that bike but didn’t use it and save some big $

Narrow down options and maybe go check them out in person.

I’m all about hunting “smarter not harder”. There’s only one spot that I occasionally hunt that I could use an e-bike and really torn whether I truly will put it to use.

And I still never found true reviews on crappy Rock laden trails - and I’d hate to get and couldn’t out to use or I get thrown off and all boogered up.

Good luck - you’ll find something.

I would look at https://www.stealthhuntingebikes.com/

Give Deiter a call and he can answer all your questions. He's also going to be at the Mobile Hunter Expo if you want to ride one.

I've had a Biltrix for a few years and it's a life saver in the midwest on certain farms. Other than a flat tire the Biktrix has served my purpose, it's very flat where I hunt, if it's hilly at all I'd want more power.

Mid drive, I have 500 watt with lower range Box gears and I can trailer a quartered elk up hill. Its slow like 3-4 mph but it does the job....

Just curious, what are your thoughts on diy or premade ebikes. Do you think that getting your own non ebike bike and adding a motor to it, like the bafang, is better than buying an ebike made specifically by a company?

I think doing your own has its advantages, but also disadvantages. Advantage to building your own is you know every part on it and can easily troubleshoot anything that may come up. You have to since your the one that made it. Disadvantage though is the trial and error theory. When things work, great, but when they dont and you have to redo something or buy another part. That can get costly. As far as buying a ebike from a company, That bike frame parts and everything are made for that Ebike and normally that means things go together much better and tend to be more reliable. You have alot to consider. If your buying an Ebike to hunt with, You may want to make your focus on the hunting and alot less worrying about what your going to have to fix next. In that case Id buy one from a company.

You must have the 750 watt then cause my 1000 watt with 21 Ah battery does not leave me wishing I had more power. Im not a small guy either Im 250lbs 6 foot and pull a trailer with 50-60lbs of gear in the trailer. Not to many places Ive gotten stuck or had to bail myself out but then I know my limits as well =)
