The Gruman are warmer than the SDU. Very warm like the Kuiu Pro. Great piece of gear.

Yes, the Kuiu Pro is worth the extra money.

The Rab pants tear when you look at them or at least they did for me.
The Rab down pants must have a different shell than their synthetic ones. I'll have to look that up. My synthetic Rabs have reinforced seat and knees, seem to be a heavier outer shell, but they aren't on the level of warmth of good down pants, but that's just to be expected.

30d Pertex on the Rab Photon synthetic pants outer with Pertex shield seat and knees, 20d Pertex on the Rab Argon down pants. SG Grumman uses 15d Pertex, Kuiu Ultra uses 30d Toray stunner stretch with 70dx80d reinforced areas. The SG uses the lightest face fabric of them all.

I have some mountain hardware compressor pants. I think going on 8 years now. Zero complaints. Durable, and plenty warm for me.

I'm glad you're having a better experience than I did. I really wanted to like the Grumman line but it didn't work for me. If the Grumman pants had a 70D butt and lower legs like the SD pro they'd be great for me. Like I said earlier, I litteraly tore a hole in the Grumman pulling them out of the box. SD pro is much more durable in my experience.

Grumman is better compared to the Ultra for durability in my experience, but the Grumman is certainly warmer than the Ultra.

Yeah I didn’t catch the ripping out of the box - that is some BS, and I’d be completely unhappy with that as well.

Hey guys, bumping this back up. I've been trying to find a late season Nov/Dec pant and so far I haven't really liked many of the options yet. They are either too loud, too warm for hiking, too cold when stationary, don't fit for crap, don't have vents, etc etc...This would be used for both elk and deer hunts in the Mtns and on the plains, primarily rifle hunts. These would be day hunts from my house or a base camp.

So, now I'm considering my first pair of puffy pants. I am a bigger guy and sweat a lot, so for cold weather I'd just use my Attacks while moving, and slip the puffy on while stationary.

Are they a pain to get on and off, if only for a brief period of time?

Do they come off and pack up quick if ya gotta make a quick move on an animal? Or do you guys do some hunting while wearing them in certain situations?

If I buy, I'm leaning towards the Kuiu SD Pro. For sure a full length zip is a must for me. Are these pants packable enough (2x or 3x) to lash to the outside or bottom of an Exo 1800? Do they run small?

Thanks

No.

Yes.

Almost never. That’s not what they are for.

Yes, they pack down small enough.

In my mind the crucial factor is noise. A shell fabric that will hold in down is always more noisy than the shell fabric that can be used with synthetic. The Kuiu Super Down Pro compared with their Kenai hoody is a good example, the hoody is a lot less noisy. So if all you intend to wear the puffy pants for is glassing or around camp, and weight is a factor, down beats synthetic. If you want to be able to hunt in them, still hunt or even stand hunt, go synthetic. If weight and bulk are not a factor, the MILSURP pant Cost4gun recommended is hard to beat. Warm, cheap, and durable.

Froze in Kuiu superdown...only rely on Sitka synthetic Kelvins now. They work 3-4 times better even if wet.

Just go ahead buy the under armor alpine ops down. I bow hunt in mine for whitetail and haven’t gotten cold yet.
