I want to build a 300wsm on a tikka action. My goal is to start with a long action so I can run the big long bullets and still fit the magazine. I will also add a pre-fit so I can choose the length and have it threaded for suppressor.

The question is what is the best caliber to start with (Assuming I will replace the barrel)? I am thinking the 7rem mag will get me the best start. Does anyone know if the 7rem magazine will fit 300wsm rounds?

Here is your best bet. https://www.eurooptic.com/jrtxe341-tikka-tikka-t3x-lite-.300-wsm-syn-243--barrel-mpn-jr

Put a long-action bolt stop in it, get some LA mags or a couple of HCA mags, and any other mods you want and you will be good to go.

If you want SS, it is a bit more, but still better than buying something else and rebarreling. https://www.eurooptic.com/jrtxb341-tikka-tikka-t3x-lite-.300-wsm-s-s-syn-243--barrel-mp
Thanks. But wouldn't this approach just add the cost of buying a long action bolt stop?

I am still going to replace the barrel no matter what I start with.

A bolt stop is $30. Less if you get someone to sell you a take-off factory one.

As for rebarreling, Tikka barrels are some of the best factory barrels on the market, but it is your money. I would just hate for you to build something that ends up being the same, or worse, than the factory offering.

No, the L magazine that Tikka uses for all magnum and non-magnum long action cartridges won work with the .300 WSM, its just a bit too fat. It does however fit in a PRC mag.

I have a Tikka 300 win mag I am wanting to sell. Never been fired, barrel has been threaded 1/2x28 but left factory length. Barrel and action have been cerakoted black, tikka tactical pic rail installed. Was initially thinking about building a 6.5 PRC off of it but have since been thinking about dropping down some to a 6 creed

6.5 PRC, because the magazine will work for WSM and the barrel is worth selling as it's still a "hot" caliber. I used a 300WM for my WSM project with Mountain Tactical magazine

I like the idea of selling a 6.prc barrel.

Will a long for caliber 300wsm fit in the 6.5prc magazines? Like really long.

Just get the HCA mags. They have shoulder stops built in so the tips of the rounds don't slam into the magazine upon recoil deforming them. Its a long action magazine, so it will take something in the 3.3X" range for COAL iirc. Plenty long.

This!

I used Mountain Tactical LA mags for my 338 Sherman Mega, which has similar dimensions to the WSM cases, just a bit longer.
However, when I built my 6.5 Max (based on the SAUM case), I bit the bullet and got some HCA mags and am using them for both the Max and the Mega.

+1 for the HCA magazines. They worked great for me seating 208 ELD M long when I had a 300 WSM. Unless you're switching for twist rate reasons, the Tikka barrels are tough to beat. My 300 WSM Tikka barrel was substantially better than the two custom barrels that have followed it.
