Does anyone stealth camp?

I usually stop in a church parking lot. Lots around and usually decent places

Churches are private property. My mom is the facilities director for a local medium sized town church and deals with this...

While most churches are kind enough and will allow you to sleep through the night, it’s still a dick move to just assume a privately owned church parking lot is yours to use freely.

The definition in post #4 of this thread references stealth camping in vans so I assumed yes.

I moved cross country a few times in a rental truck. I never liked leaving all my possessions unattended in the parking lots of hotels I could afford. I started setting up my sleeping bag on the roof while parked in rest stops.

Another time when I was much younger and it was still allowed, my buddies and I would camp in the C parking lot at Mary Jane. One night it got down to about -20 so so we took our sleeping bags into the entryway of the heated restrooms. I woke up when a guy came in early in the morning and said something like "oh for christ's sake" and started stepping over us in his ski boots to get to the bathroom. Not very stealthy...

I find it interesting that there is so much judgement and confusion about why someone would do this coming from a group of people who spend thousands of dollars, devote thousands of hours, and put themselves through all sorts of misery, simply to kill an animal (I'm part of that group btw ).

People probably do it for the adventure - it's a cheap, harmless way to do something other than sleep in your own bed for a night. I've never done it, and doubt I ever will but I can see why someone might consider it fun - especially if you don't have easy access to normal campgrounds.

It is not necessarily "under privileged" individuals that are freely spending time and money to do an actively that provides them with excitement.

If an individual does not like their situation in life, they and they alone have the power to make the required changes. It may take time but every single one of us can make positive changes to improve our financial situation. Most of us have the lives that we want based upon our choices and actions. Some choose to do what is necessary to reach a goal while others choose to do nothing other than whine.

If by chance you can find a room its gonna be $200 per night. And when you're there for work and your company doesn't provide the room.

If by chance you can find a room its gonna be $200 per night. And when you're there for work and your company doesn't provide the room.

Camping is illegal in most areas of Southern WI where i grew up unless you’re in a designated campground. I think it’s weird anyone would want to camp in a campground with tents crammed every 40 yards full of people. So yeah, let’s say i’ve done a fair amount of stealth camping wherever i pleased.

Go in unassuming looking, lightweight gear that packs down small, and set up at last light then get out before first lite and you’ll never have a problem.
