Do you hunt from home?

Some good hunting from home. I live in a bird hunters paradise. Whitetail deer isn't too shabby either. Bit of a stretch, but if I leave the house early enough I can get out to mule deer country.

Like many have already said; its a little of both for me. I really appreciate the closer to home spots the older I get.

After a trip to the shooting range I was talking w my father about how hunting has changed, the technology, and the travel involved.

Anyway we were wondering how many folks get to hunt from the house anymore? Sleep in your own bed set an alarm and go hunting. It seems with guys chasing the best perceived unit, out of state guys, and heck even front "rangers" setting up camps that it is getting less and less as in my fathers day they never traveled to hunt.. Now I am lucky as most of my scouting/hunting is from home w overnights and 2 nights mixed in there. Or almost everything I hunt is a hour or 2 from the front door even if ya count the hike, dirt bike, side by side, or jeep to approach.

So how many of you guys sleep in your own bed and hunt from your house? Does not matter what ya hunt just wondering how many folks get to hunt like this and what ya are hunting?

I get to do both , I much prefer hunting out of family cabin but do hunt from home when the schedule makes it happen

I have property that shares a property line with a NF and I have access to 800 acre farm 11 miles from my house...except hunting out west I mostly sleep in my bed. WT, Black bear, ducks, rabbits, squirrels, dove all from my house.

I am primarily sleeping at home while hunting archery elk in September and whitetails or mule deer in November and at home for sure for bears. Occasionally the neighbor and I will pack up a wall tent and go hunt late season elk or mule deer.

Interesting to see quite a few folks still can hunt from home. I pry hunt/scout from
my bed 50%ish of the time. Or I end up back packed into wilderness areas a lot when hunting. Again I am lucky or when ya have 350”+ type bulls and well “golden” bucks around the house on public no need to travel to far !

Could kill a pretty darn good buck walking distance from my house each year as I got permission but from where I sit what’s the fun in that. I will stick to competing it out at 12’k + on public land w a bow.…

Anyway above are only a couple of the regulars around my house this year or maybe when I get too old to hunt up high I will take advantage of that opportunity..

Last night was fun we sat in the porch for a bit and listened to the rattle of the antlers as the bucks fought in the area by moonlight = pretty cool…

Both of these are from walking from the house in AZ. The herd is hit and miss nearby though, some years there will be a herd of 20 does during the rut to keep and eye on, some years there are no deer within miles. We quail hunt out back as well. And have trapped bobcats.

I have a few acres at home. 1200 acres of state ground a few hundred yards away to the west and a bigger hunk of state ground 5 miles to the east. Could actually do a lot of hunting for WT, pheasant, ducks, geese, turkey from home but rarely do. Have a cabin about 3 hours away in some big north woods country and I try to pull off a western hunt or two every year, so there's just not a lot of time left. If I'm still around this country when I retire I'll maybe put more effort into hunting out my backdoor, but such as it is, I like the feel of a camp or staying with family/buddies for a few days and making hunting a priority. There's certainly more and bigger dear around home than around our cabin, but I guess you could say that I'm at the stage where the total experience is worth as much or more than the outcome in terms of tags filled.

As stated by others, when I hunt close to home, thoughts of what I could be getting done on the homestead, where there is always plenty of ongoing projects and remodeling, take over and ultimately take away from the experience. I left a 160"+ buck go during the rut a few years ago that wouldn't leave a doe that was bedded in my front yard.

The walleye fishing within 5 min from home is fantastic, and I try to make the most of that season every year, so there's always that.

98% from my house i can be where i hunt deer on both sides of the river in 10 minutes birds are out my back door about only time im not in my bed is when i travel a few hours from my house to shoot ducks with a buddy that has house over on the east side of the state.

I spend more time out of my bed training dogs all summer than i do hunting

My private property is 1.5 hours from my house so that’s pretty close.

There is public land within 30 minutes of me so I can hit that up if needed.

But in terms of hunting right out the back, that’s not an option. I live in a neighborhood in the city limits where hunting isn’t allowed

Man jealous of all you guys that hunt out your back door. That’s the goal with retirement in a few years just not feasible in this state anymore. A decent spot for me is about 2-3.5 hours away.

There is always the occasional trip west for tags I am lucky enough to draw, but the majority of my hunting is on my property. I only have 50 acres so the walks to my stands from my house are short.

I regularly hunt from home. I could camp and get another 45min of sleep, but I sleep better in my own bed which offsets the additional sleep I could get by camping closer. It's easy to pack the night before, eat real food and do laundry as needed, etc.

The only downside; it is so easy to run home. If the hunting is slow, it doesn't take long before the thoughts, of why am I out here when I could be: (insert random project that needs attention at home).

Always have hunted from home but I live in the woods. Missed plenty of hunting seasons working
7-12’s Meat expensive enough and travel doesn’t help.

I have hunted from the house or with the maximum of an hours drive. Depends on the target. Now that season has ended, nine head of cows ran into my north field tonight - jumping and kicking and celebrating their success. This is why I call it revenge hunting. There will be payback.

I hunt on my farm, where I live. My best deer stand is only 200 yards from the house.

That's all I do. We don't have the best opportunities here in WA, but we have plenty. I am building a house on 20ac currently and my in-laws own the 20 next door. Its in the mule deer migration corridor in one of the top GMUs in the state and is one of the few with a late archery season. I've shot turkey and grouse on it so far and have seen plenty of deer, bear, and cougar on camera. I specifically bought here because of the late archery season and the game in the area. We also butt up to Forest Service land so I can hike right out of my back yard into public and hunt miles of tough access land. Buying this property actually revitalized my drive to hunt.

About 100yds from where my back door will be. Sadly we got some heavy snow that pushed him out day before season started.

I can sit in the recliner and watch a 12 point and 10 point whitetail eat out of the feeder 60 yards away.
Have been here since 2018 and in late 2019 i started cleaning up the place and started planting summer/winter food plots. Ive noticed quite a difference in the past 2 years.
Hunted in 2018, 2019 and 2020, never saw anything but a random coyote.
In 2021 wife killed a nice 6 point.
2022 we didnt get to hunt,
2023 wife killed a nice 11 point and a big 8 point.
This year im sitting here watching the big 12 and 10 point eating out of the feeder in front of the house.
I enjoy watching the squirrels, rabbits, and deer playing now.
Crazy ninja red fox squirrel loves to hide in the feeder and wait for the deer to stick snout in the feeder and he jumps out onto the deer. Working on getting a 4K wifi camera out there so i can put it up on the TV..
