I take a heavier pad. Exped Downmat UL7 wide/long. It's much warmer and more comfortable than other pads I've used. I found I sleep much better with this pad.

I am so happy to read that, I just bought one on clearance at REI. Saved a ton of money.

I hope it works as well for you as it has for me. It's the heaviest pad I've tried, but for me, the comfort is worth the extra weight. The snozzle bag kicks ass, too.

A couple cans of Copenhagen, Thermarest pillow and some whiskey. Awhile back someone mentioned they pack in a Chipotle burrito for the first nights dinner. Thats one of the best ideas I've read on this site.

When we take in our base camp on horseback the luxuries are numerous. When I backpack, my guilty pleasures are PB/honey/bacon sandwiches. One per day.

Coffee is a staple not a luxury ;).

I carry a small radio. I like to catch weather reports and have a difficult time concentrating if I can't listen to, or at least catch the scores of the Huskies and Seahawks. By the time Sept rolls around, unfortunately, the Mariners are so far out of the pennant race that I don't care about their scores.

I also carry a tin or two of smoked oysters. That's my comfort food and helps calm me down during lightning storms.

I pack a 12 pack of coca cola in four miles to base camp every year. Ice cold treat when i get back to camp every night. For Bivy hunts i pack the latest bugle magazine. Nice to read a couple articles to help fall asleep. Always have vias with me, that's included in my food bag.

I ditched UL pads awhile back, I take the extra weight of thick warm pad over lack of good nights sleep. I also carry wipes, don't know if it's a luxury...but they are a must have.
I also take in about two pounds of smoked sausage, I add it to a few meals and it's really nice change of pace vs the usual fare. .....now the real luxury..if there is any way to swing it I like to have a flask of good single malt with me, there always seems a night during a hunt that it's appropriate.

Ah you are an unfortunate mariners fan too I see! I listen to the games on my phone if I have service..

The Via's are great, especially the Italian Roast.........but not a fan of the French Roast flavor. They're quick and easy and no mess. Would be better with some 1/2 and 1/2, but I'm not hauling that in.

I can't think of anything I take that's a luxury item, except maybe a sleeping pad. But many would agree that a pad is a requirement, and it is if you want a decent night's sleep.

At base camp I always have ice cold A&W. That's my luxury item after spending a few nights roughing it.

Trader Joes has an instant coffee with half and half and sugar, supposedly pretty good, I just need to remember and stop by and pick a few up to try. Would be nice to not have to support Starbucks.

I'll have to check out Trader Joe's for that. They have some GREAT salami also, think I'll be packing some of that this year.

Good whiskey is my luxury. No cheap shit, I don't spend enough nights in elk country every year to drink crap while I'm there.

The Trader Joe's stuff is good, but it's pretty weak. I mix one packet of it with one packet of Via, and find its the perfect blend of taste/caffeine for me. Good stuff.

I take a therm a rest chair that my pad slips into. It's 10 ounces but rolls up small and worth it to me to be able to sit and rest my back awhile at night.

I take a pillow case. I then stuff it with puffy jacket or whatever extra clothes I have. It really improves my sleep. Very little extra weight too.
