Do fast twist 243's make the 6mm Creedmoor pointless?

Does the availability of fast twist 243 factory rifles make the 6mm creedmoor obsolete? 6mm creedmoor is common enough, but it definitely hasn't taken off the way that the 6.5 did. I know that currently the factory ammo options for 6mm CM offer longer, heavier bullets, but I'd expect that'll change with time.

Depends. It could, if you reload. Factory loaded .243 negates the benefit of the faster twist.

If doing the same thing made different cartridges pointless we would only hunt with like 3 worldwide. Rifle and rifle part manufactures need to innovate to sell. Tinkerers are always trying to find the better mousetrap. Enjoy the options, use what you like.

I don’t think so, but I would almost certainly get a fast twist .243 before I got a 6mm Creed. But that is because I own one .243 already. I haven’t tested whether a 1:8 twist .243 can get good accuracy out of the heaviest/longest factory ammo.

But better question can you find a company that loads 108eldx’s in 243 out side custom loader like Cooper Creek?

Answer your question no, other way around. 243 is dead unless you just have a ton of 243 or variant brass.

Today’s consumer is greatly impacted by online marketing and influencers, who both have large incentives to pimp out the latest cartridge from the creedmoor to smaller capacity 6mms. The need is somewhat manufactured, but more options are better than fewer, so I won’t say they are a bad thing. The 6 creed exists to make money, not because it’s all that special.

I wish I could find the article of a guy who started shooting 1000 yard competitions with a 243, improving his rifle and loading over time until he was winning matches. Before the creedmoor, before the XC, before the GT, very accurate 243s were used all over.

I would expect the 6creed to stretch less with the steeper shoulders. There is also talk that the shallow shoulders of the 243 focused the combustion in the throat versus the case neck. Both would be addressed in a 243ai though.

Isn't this basically a similar situation to the 260 Rem and the 6.5 CM? Sure, the 260 can do basically everything the CM can do, but the 6.5 was just a better mousetrap.

I think if you hand load and can get the longer BC bullets like a 108eldm to work out of a Sammi spec 243 chamber then there’s not much to be gained. The 6CM was purpose built to run the high BC stuff whereas the 243 is not. Will it do it yes, but you could also spend a lot of time screwing around trying to get it to work where as the 6CM works now.

Yeah, 3 bucks a shot is not what I would call availability. I like my 243, I might get another 243 barrel when my current one burns out, but I reloaded and would turn the 243 barrel into a stake and have a 6 creed barrel in the mail today if I had to pay that price per round.

You Confirmed my response above, out side of micro custom reloaders if you want a 1-8 twist bullets you pretty much have to roll your own. If you are going to rebarrel might as well move to a 6CM type chamber that was purposely built for the longer 1-8 twist bullets and has plenty of factory support producing ammo in those longer bullets……. again unless you just have a ton of 243 brass, and are good with what could be a frustrating load work up.

It’s the exact same reason you essentially have to go to a custom reloader if you want 270 or 7 mag 1-8 twist bullets loads. The Big guys load for what twists were produced on grand scale, not the one off rebarrel.

It’s not about opinion it’s about facts. Is the 108eldm/vld etc better then 95 BT or 95 TMK debatable but that’s a different question.

This is just like the 270 debate. The issue with expecting the 8 twist 243 to perform like the 6CM is that there is a lack of factory support for heavy bullets in the 243 due to SAAMI specification. The SAAMI approved design for the 243 is a 10 twist so commercial ammunition will be designed to function in a 10 twist barrel. Full stop, end of story.

An 8 twist 243 can perform like a 6CM but without factory support for ammunition using optimal bullets for those fast barrels. Fast twist 243's are a handloader or boutique ammo manufacturer thing when looking to chase 6CM performance.

But with companies like Tikka now offering faster twist barrels, maybe we should expect to see offerings from major ammo makers.
