Lefty Rifle for my 11 year old.

Lefty here.
There are loads of lefties on gunbroker.
Tons of tikkas
new x-bolts in 6.5 creed.
A few ruger Americans.
Also don't forget about lever actions. The browning BLR is my favorite rifle.
The BLR in 7-08 is a great gun, points well, accurate and deadly. I enjoy mine.

Don’t get anything expensive is my advice. I built mine a sweet custom. He never liked it. When he was little he liked a Rossi .357 mag we have. Now it’s an AR but really doesn’t like hunting that much anyway.

That Savage Axis Pro 2 is available in a compact version, 12.5” lop, left handed. Get the 6 ARC. I’ve had one in my cart for awhile now. If he ends up going another direction with his pastimes you won’t be out much and easy to resell.
I was looking at that. My only justification would be that there are 3 more kids behind him that can inherit the gun as their first and I can get them their own individual guns as they get older.

That’s the perfect scenario. There are no other reasonably priced compact lefty’s other than Savage/maybe Mossberg unless you start cutting the stock off.

The only reason I'm not pushing him right into a 6.5cm or 7mm08 is he is extremely recoil shy.

Im going to get him shooting well this winter with his Ruger 1022 that's in a KRG. Then step him up into the AR then graduate to a .243. We will see how it goes
Maybe he will get over it quick.

A kid almost has to use 2 fingers to pull the trigger unless it’s been worked over. They are cool rifles though.
i don't remember any issues, but i wasn't quite so young. loved my blr in 308, my first hunting rifle when lefty's weren't readily available.

In my opinion you should have him shoot based on his dominant eye. He will be far more proficient that way. Same with archery.

And buy a proper left hand gun! It’s just not that expensive in the scheme of things and while it’s very uncommon for factory ammo to have an issue it does happen and it would be much better to have a catastrophic failure with an action that’s venting the gases away from your child’s face than one that is venting it towards your child’s face

You absolutely need to match the stock to his length of pull, especially since he is recoil shy. For this reason either plan on investing in a couple of different stocks or purchase a rifle like the Savage Storm that has a adjustable LOP as well as adjustable height for the cheek piece.

Get him a left handed rifle. A tikka from euro optic or check out gun.deals with a skull number for the rifle you want.

That’s a really exciting right of passage for a Wyoming kid to get his first big game rifle when turning 12.

I was surprised how few used left handed 243s exist. This will have me on the lookout the next few years for a lefty rifle for a young family member.

Hopefully you can track down one with a fast twist.

Also a lefty. Dad started me with a Savage 110. Upgraded to a Rem 700LH in ‘06. I’ve had and still have numerous 700LHs. Upgraded to Terminus leftys. I recommend getting him a Tikka T3 is a modern caliber with a tighter twist (6CM/6.5CM). You should be able to readily find good factory ammo with heavier bullets.

Im going to 2nd a Savage Axis 2 Compact in 243. Available on europtic.com in Grey, fde, or green.....with or with scope.

1:9.25 twist but they use a barrel nut so swapping to faster twist if needed should be no problem.

For those of you who are lefty and using a right handed rifle....how is follow up shots for bolt manipulation. I cant imagine being able to run the bolt for a followup shot without wrecking your shooting position.

Excellent I’m just as fast with a browning and tikka. But I don’t want a right hand with 90 degree bolt throw. So browning is my first choice then tikka then Ruger American. Safety on browning is best for lefty with rh bolt.

My son is turning 11 on Monday. I recently found out something I wasn't prepared for. If he turns 12 the calendar year of hunting season he is able to hunt that year. I thought I had 2 years before I had to worry about outfitting him with a rifle but that's not the case.

Im a Tikka guy, but left handed Tikkas in .243 (Wyoming minimum for elk) are seemingly non existent.

My next choice for factory would be Browning and they seem to not exist.

Howa doesn't make a lefty.

Now I'm thinking of going places I swore I never would...Savage Axis seems to be readily available almost anywhere. The twist rate sucks a 1:9 so I believe I'll be limited to the lighter 6mm bullets, which would probably be fine for his first couple years.

The other option would be to have him start shooting my .223 AR platform and use that for deer and Antelope and maybe just shoot my 6.5 CM for elk, which will be in a Bravo with and adjustable LOP.

He is recoil shy and I don't want to start him with anything too big, but he needs to work on his shooting this spring and summer if he's going to hunt next year.

Any insight or advice is appreciated.

Could start him off in something like a cva scout single shot in a 6 arc or another caliber if it fits him. I like single shots with young kids just starting. Started my son at ten with a marlin lever 44 and only loaded one shot. He wouldn’t have been able to shoot a quick follow up shot or running shot anyways.

so order up a left handed tikka?

Also 1:9 isnt exactly a handicap. Hell a 1:10 will still throw a pile of decent bullets

I haven’t found a 100gr or less bullet that doesn’t shoot ok to well in my wife’s 1:10 tikka 243. I’m really liking the 95gr partition at the moment.
