Hey everyone. I've attached an interesting read here, hopefully you can view it. I have a 15 Duramax GMC. I've never really noticed anything that will significantly increase fuel mileage or fuel economy, so what I am most interested in is lessening the wear on the engine and internal components, while of course trying to balance price. I've been using the Diesel Kleen in my truck at every fuel up and I have not had any issues. While it isn't the best additive, according to this research, it is affordable and readily available. I used to use Shaeffers, which tests better, may go back to that soon. I would buy Optilube XPD if I wanted to spend more money, which seems to be the best additive, but so far I don't really see the need. I also run Royal Purple 15w40 and RP oil filter and change the oil every 7000 miles. Maybe someday I'll do an Amsoil system but haven't fully looked into it yet. I live in Texas so not worried about low temperatures, only high temperatures here. I hope this helps.

Amsoil "systems" are another fun rabbit hole. Most of the oil samples we send in are always high in silicates before the oil itself breaks down. The AIR filter is the culprit there......and these are Donaldson units that are VERY expensive.

Truth be told, rotella t6 synthetic checks every box any mfr has for oil requirements......but long interval services can only occur if all systems are in top shape. Throw a washable element air filter on and go pull a oil sample....you won't like it.

I definitely have not done my research on Amsoil fully. The whole taking oil samples and sending them in seems to be more for specialized purposes, which I don't think I have. As long as I do regular oil changes, I feel like I should be ok. Been doing regular oil changes on our GMC Acadia, roayal purple oil in it, fixing to hit 200k miles on it. It's a 2014. Still running strong, only had relatively minor issues so far. The only major issues I've had with my truck is the Fin DEF system. Had to replace the heater and pump, which I did myself, only had to take it in to get the codes cleared. Now just got a DEF quality poor message, back to the dealership. I don't have a programmer to run all the diagnostics and force the pump to do a DEF injection test and see the nox readings, do a regen and all that. Should have just deleted it. but that's another thread.
As far as oil, I have tried to research as much info via forums in the past, specific to people who have the same truck/car/model/engine to get some real world feedback. I remember seeing more posts with bad reviews on the rotella to be comfortable using it. Definitely not based on lab research. But I landed on Royal Purple and have had no issues. Plus a friend who works on Duramax engines recommended either Royal Purple or Schaeffer's, which I also used to use with no issues. I use ACDelco air filter and transmission internal filter. Use the allison spin on and use Shaeffers transmission fluid.

I use Amsoil in my truck and my utility tractor, not every tank for my pickup and I do put it in my storage tanks since they can condensate.

My bigger concern is the high pressure pumps are designed for European fuel which is much cleaner the what we have here, just consider it a little added insurance.

I don’t use the cheap stuff because it can create rust.

I use hotshot on the regular with my duramax. I’ve noticed a slight increase in gas mileage per gallon and the engine seems to run better with it. Depending on where you get your diesel fuel from.

Old Cummings 5.9 never had additives = 270k
Powerstroke 6.7 used a little when prolonged cold with #1.
We will add anti gel (power service) to the tractors, telehandlers, lifts prior to very cold spells when they had to be run, same with torpedo heaters on job sites. Have had more issues and problems with construction equipment that is exposed to harsh weather for extended periods.
The newer diesel trucks just run great in the cold, or at least my last three have.
Cummings huh? Never take advice from anyone who doesn't know how to spell the topic at hand.
