Deciding on a 22 and is the ARC really that great?

Both those explanations make great sense, thanks. So, in reading the 223 thread, Form kills a bull at like 802 yards and everyone agrees you can't tell the diff in the damage from a 300 or 7 or whatever. So knowing that, why do you say the 223 isn't suitable for the distances I suggested? 500 yds I think I said.
I'm not Form.... but the .223 drops below 1800fps between 400-450 depending on your density altitude which is the velocity threshold for the tmk to work with almost 100% certainty. In Form's case I believe they were testing to see what the bullet would do at a lower velocity threshold. If I remember correctly it was also a very controlled situation where he was using an mk12 AR so he could send bullets very quickly and he had an experienced spotter watching for him.

Folllowing as I made the decision to narrow the entire arsenal to 2 calibers. 22 &6.5. The 6.5 I am running a CM and Grendel. The 22 only have 223 and want a faster version as I “think” I will have an easier wind call. I don’t know and am looking forward the same information as the OP. Yes I am being a CS and trying to buy my way into being a better shooter beyond practice. I also can’t get the itch scratched for new toys.
In my opinion, and it's just that, speed is cool but drift resistance is a product of bc. Speed affects it some, bc effects it alot. Speed helps alot with terminal effect. Something about hitting a target with speed that amplifies the hydrostatic shock effect.

Im not a physics professor, I just observe alot of varmit funeral services. 17 hornet thru 6.5 prc

Thanks for all the input. Really appreciate the discussion. I like the idea that the ARC ammo is pretty comparable to the 223 IF you are buying factory heavies. If that is indeed true, I can make a better case for the ARC.

For those with more experience and probably have even read more (I did see the AK Moose vid)... I kill virtually all of my animals at 40-150 yards. Hunt timber almost exclusively and sometimes I'll get a chance at something at 150. There are places I could shoot 400+, even 800 or whatever, but honestly, have not had that opportunity come up. So, I'm in the woods and the bull is 75 yards... any diff 'Really' in penetration and deathing between these three guns, all with their heavies?
You mentioned up to 800 yards in one post so I was trying to give you more than the minimum. If you are sub-500 yards 100% of the time and not trying to use a 16" barrel 223/5.56 (my 16" is 200 fps slower than my 22") you "should" be fine with a 223 and the 77tmk but the 22 ARC and the 75 ELDM/80 ELDX/88 ELDM would allow you to do the same thing in a shorter package. Whichever you choose, make sure you practice to your desired max range and past it and hold yourself accountable for not shooting past your self set limit.

A 20” or 22” bolt gun chambered for 22 ARC would hammer big time. I’m gonna sound like a major stockholder for Ruger, but there are like three different models of 22 ARC chambered Ruger American Gen 2 rifles with that longer 20”+ length barrel. Yes, it’s not that pretty of a rifle. But does it work? It’s sorta like takin that solid 6 home from the bar…You can leave the lights on and feel great about yourself the next day.

I'm short barrel junky now, probably be 16-18", suppressed. I may pick one of the gen 2 ranch rifles with the 16.1" barrel.

Hecky yeah, My first point is to get the rifle that is mechanically capable... then start practicing. I do the 500 yard line being sort of a max for me, but who knows where this goes over time. I have a good 500 yard range scoped out and looking forward to getting up there in June and shooting. Prior to that, lots of 100 yard shooting. Never gonna go lobbing bullets.

Maybe 2640ish. (you talking 223?)
Yeah so that muzzle velocity with a 77TMK hits the 1800fps minimum terminal impact velocity at 475 yards at my current conditions. Distance will vary based on your conditions. That kind of sets your hunting distance for guaranteed bullet expansion. 800 yards would be well below 1800fps with a .223.

The bullet will stay super sonic to 925ish yards, so you can basically practice as far as you’d like and still be super sonic.

Basically add 200fps on and re-run the calculator with the 22ARC.
