Creepy experiences in the backcountry

The cynic in me thinks it wouldn't be too too difficult to rig up some sort of motion activated hidden speaker to do exactly what you guys experienced in order to keep people away from a good blacktail area. Fact you went back there numerous times (and killed a deer) without a similar experience just backs that up. Either the battery died or the culprit moved the setup to his next honey hole.

There have certainly been more diabolical actions taken to keep people out of certain areas...
Lots of potential sources of the music have went through my mind since that day. Including a vehicle on the logging road down the mountain playing music. Having spent many days on the face of this mountain over the years since that time, I never could determine anything that feasibly could’ve made the sound.

There’s definitely some other hunters around there, though 99% stick to the roads and clearcuts. A local bow hunter who used to frequent this area as well, is the only person I’ve met who knew about the cabin other than my own group of friends. He also had some interesting stories of this area, though more bigfoot oriented. If indeed someone had an elaborate set up, they get a they get an A+ for concealment given mid 2000’s technology and the fact that I’ve bushwhacked all over this area.

Not hunting…… Fly fishing. Back in the 80’s when float tubes were such a big deal that all the small lakes looked like bowls of Cheerios with so many people floating around in basically just an inner tube. Somehow, I found a lake that I was by myself…. I’m just drifting, enjoying the sun, Iake is flat calm, I look over my shoulder and I see a disturbance on the surface of the water…. Shit it’s heading my way, What is it…… I still can’t make it out, I strip my line in and throw a cast over to it… still just a weird ripple on the surface. Finally it gets close enough…. It’s about a 4-5’ long Bull Snake headed my way, thinking he has found a dry oasis to slither up onto…. I persuaded him to swim elsewhere with some frantic kicking and splashing of my flippers. A year or two later, camped at he same lake, I had one slithering under the very thin floor of my tent, just as I went to bed. And then there were the Bats there too…. Great Lake to fish and camp at. LOL.
I had a rattlesnake try this on me in the middle of Choctawhatchee bay! I was at least a half mile from shore, luckily in a pedal Kayak but he thumped my kayak enough that I felt it. That was the day I discovered rattlesnakes will swim long distances in salt water. I’m surprised a hungry jack crevalle didn’t take him.

Yep.

When we first moved south, we were doing a lot of exploration.
I did not need to work at that point, and we simply invested our time discovering our new home.

One afternoon my Lady & I were on a local river, trying for salmon.
Along comes a raft and a couple of tubers.
Raft hits the bank and a very large fellow jumps off it and yells at us Ypippee Ki Yay MF!
Then starts stalking swiftly towards us.

I immediately unlimbered my 1911 (still had a valid carry permit then) and loudly suggested he get his ass as far from us as possible.
Ho saw I was serious, and got out of Dodge rather quickly.

Gives me pause to think what might have been if I had not been packing.

No carry permits for us Biologist types any more.
But a couple of large Wolf Hybrids appear to pack the same effect.

Cheers
Is there more detail here? Is it possible he didn't even see you guys because that's completely insane. Like what was he possibly doing other than coming to attack you?

I grew up at the base of one of the biggest mountains around in central PA, couple thousand acres of undeveloped woods, pretty steep on both sides but the ridge is about 100 yards wide and runs about 30 miles or so.
Spent most of my youth up there, camping out with my buddies sleeping in the open and riding our mountain bikes while terrorizing the local small game population with 22's.
Went up alone one weekend in September when i was 13 or so, found a dead deer in the crook of a tree about 20ft up with its neck twisted in a way that I can only equate to how a chicken or a duck looks when you dispatch em.
Not overly creepy, but was a "Huh, interesting" moment

Yes, and it was a thought.. but wouldve been a longgggg jump

There's been documented cases of this up in Alaska, Canada, and some of the more remote places in the continental US, sometimes dozens of feet up. The problem is, there aren't any North American predators that take their big-game prey into trees. Cougars and bears bury/cache it, wolves obliterated down to bone shards.

Real random, just wondering if anyone has any stories from backcountry hunts that were unexplainable, weird, or just plain scary
I saw a bright light one time that was shaped thing and tall way in the sky, I thought it was a plane but it was perfectly still for some time. I still have no idea what it was but I could see if for over an hour in the same spot - but it was too big or 'too close' to be a star.

About 5 years ago while packing out a mule deer under a full moon I saw some of the strangest cloud formations I've ever seen. The sky was mostly clear except for some patchy whispy clouds being illuminated by the moon above a Ridge line maybe 7 miles away. Just below the normal looking clouds were these 3 identical vertical cylinder shaped clouds that were spaced very evenly apart. There was an upper, middle, and lower cylinder and their spacing was like stairs stepping down for lack of a better comparison. They stayed like that for several minutes and then just sort of faded away. I'm 100% certain they were clouds but their perfect upright cylinder shapes and even spacing was beyond strange and I would love to hear a meteorological explanation.

Might have been the Space Station.
We saw much of the same when anchored offshore of Vancouver Island several times.

Not the same, but...

Running from Idaho Falls to south of Salt Lake City, I ran into this:

Always wondered what it was...

I’ve heard a lot of what sounded like whistling and voices hiking around in the Appalachians before and after daylight. But by far, the creepiest thing ever for me was what sounded like 2-3 coyotes getting after a rabbit in the predawn hours.

It was either that, or 7 demons raping a young adult woman. I’ll never know…I kept hiking and hammered a decent whitetail buck about mid-morning.
