Creepy experiences in the backcountry

Running from Idaho Falls to south of Salt Lake City, I ran into this:

Always wondered what it was...

They look like small funnels. Was there any breeze?

Wild thing to me is that it’s casting a shadow virtually to the ground.

I've seen water spouts like that over the ocean , very thin and cast a shadow .

I’ve heard a lot of what sounded like whistling and voices hiking around in the Appalachians before and after daylight. But by far, the creepiest thing ever for me was what sounded like 2-3 coyotes getting after a rabbit in the predawn hours.

It was either that, or 7 demons raping a young adult woman. I’ll never know…I kept hiking and hammered a decent whitetail buck about mid-morning.

There is definitely something about a coyote frenzy raising the hair on the back of your neck

I don’t consider it a creepy experience tho some might. I was hunting alone on a mountain ridge in eastern NV. Not much foliage just sage and scrub. A group of three coyotes came trotting toward me at a very businesslike pace. Pretty sure they were on their way to a hunter killed carcass that i had passed a half hour before. I was standing stock still with the sun at my back and the wind in my face. They couldn’t see or smell me. They just keep coming, and the lead dog stopped about ten feet in front of me. I could see the gold flecks in his irises. The lead dog knew something was off but wasn’t sure what. I said “How ya doin buddy?” He just turned and led the bunch away at the same pace he came in at. I don’t know why they didn’t hightail it, other than maybe they sensed I meant them no harm.

Sure it was yotes and not foxes? I've only ever heard coyotes make pretty normal coyote noises, but when I was 14 or 15 I woke up to the sound of a fox going crazy outside my window one night and sat there clutching my 10/22 for dear life. Only found out later what it was, but your description sounds about right.

Foxes and Bobcats can both sound like that. Definitely an experience to hear them at camp, in the middle of the night. Inexperienced folks can easily mistake it for human.

Coyotes are quite a bit more distinctive and easy to identify, at least in my experience.

Very little breeze.

They kind of look like waterspouts as noted, but no water?

to be honest, the first thing I saw in the picture was contrails and their shadows in the underlying clouds, but I wasn't there.

I know the area well. Looks like you just turned south out of Portneuf? What time of day?

OK at 11:00am the sun should be in south-east sky. It really looks to me like contrails. If you can imagine that the clouds with the shadow are lower then the white line, and it looks like it is dissipating from north to south. Looks like contrails, but you were there and I was not. Whatever it was, cool pic man!

I do not believe they were contrails. They originated at cloud level and ran straight up and down damn near touching the ground.
