No experience in Wisconsin. But in Colorado on heavily hunted public lands, I've had better luck at night. Even on the private land I hunt where the ranchers sling lead at them, night calling has been more productive.
I like night. It takes alot of practice to get good, but I've killed way more predators at night than in the day. you can cover a ton of ground fast with a light looking for eyes
This will be my 9th year day sitting and my 2nd winter night hunting, early hunts and just before dusk have been my most successful for day scope hunts, night time I definitely have had more action. Groups of 3-4 compared to the occasional duo.
If night hunting, get a reputable thermal and tripod. I went through Pard, Armasight, Trijicon, and N-Vision before landing on Iray. It really is a buy and cry once. Same with tripods, I've been using a cheap innorell tripod for the last year and am just now looking at the QDT V2 due to mechanical failures this summer on the tripod base and horizontal locking mechanism. A lot of guys run 556, but I'd recommend 22 ARC or a nice bolt action, I've seen too many coyotes run off because someone couldn't get a great shot on a dog and they dissappear.
Night is better and more fun in Nebraska. The experience at night is just really cool. I had my gun mounted on a stand up tripod last winter with a yote coming in a Great Horned owl landed on the barrel of my rifle. The dam thing looked gigantic and scared the hell out of me. I didn't get the coyote it might have been the little girl scream I let out.
^^^THIS. You have no idea how many critters are out and about until you start scanning and something isn't 15 yards away just staring at you! That's a crazy encounter i definitely would've needed a new change of undies
