could use a hand with tikka barrel removal

I used a 5# and did not suffer any damage. Hit it with that and see what happens. Maybe tape over your trigger and bolt stop as I sent mine flying with a good whack. That’s how hard I hit it on a less than ideal vise connection. Got a better connection and one good whack with the 5# and she loosened up.

It was the bench flexing slightly, just 1/16” or even less. I added another 2x6 directly under the side of the vise that wants to “lift”, and anchored the plywood top down to that. It broke free after that. Im certain that just the tiny amount of flex was cushioning the impact, and it was not breaking free due to that. Once I eliminated that flex it transferred the wrench force much more directly.

So for the next guy that finds this thread: eliminate ANY flex in the system—even a tiny amount—and it’ll break free a lot easier.
 
What hammer are you using on the wheeler wrench? Is the wrench tight so there is no rattle or play on the action? Is the bench moving at all? I realize these things seem elementary but when trying to separate the barrel from the action, vibration is your friend. My method involves a post mounted vice bolted to concrete floor, barrel vice, and an action wrench with a 3lb sledge. With everything tight tight, one smack with the sledge loosens it every single time. If youre using a carpenters hammer or similar try a sledge, if anything has any give (including the bench flexing or shifting) it can and will make it more difficult. this is what i've had to do with my howa mini actions. Apparently big dick hank works at their factory and is generous with the rocksett. I've heard of people having to do similar with tikka rifles, but have been fortunate enough not to run into one that gave me trouble. A 6 foot cheater bar with my 190 lb ass hanging from it like a sloth couldnt break the barrels loose, but a breaker bar and a few solid whacks with a 3lb sledge while it was in a vice mounted to an I beam in the concrete broke it loose, no heat required.
 
Yall need metal work tables. Leave the 2x's for bon fires.
Well maybe. But we dont all do this stuff every day. And if you dont know, you dont know. Did you make your metal work table? I’d love to see some pics and explanation of the table itself.
 
No I did not make my shop table. Craigslist deal for way less than buying the steel woulda been. Do want to redo the thing one of these years when I get some time.

3/4" up to 1-1/4"+ tables pop up for sale often enough. And if your patient a real heavy table will surface.

I think a lot of guys do this every other year or something like that, and it may not make sense to have a super heavy steel table for only this use. Someone above mentioned a steel post set in concrete, I’m curious what people think the best option would be for an easy, DIY setup to attach a barrel vice to, that would be as close as possible to an inflexible, immovable object, without being too big of a burden to put together or store? Pics welcomed.
 
I fought one last week. I was using a 3lb deadblow to an Wheeler action wrench. Full overhead swings wouldn't budge it. I moved to a 5lb deadblow, and it popped free the first good whack. Get a bigger hammer!

The most compact, space-saving design would probably be a custom vice plate that fits into your truck hitch. A post set in concrete with a plate you can use for benchgrinder, drill press, vice, etc. would be awesome but will always be there. Lots of designs around the web for this idea.
 
There's this type of thing, but I would beef it up with welds or just make it with thicker steel tubing. Would need to run a hitch clamp too so that there's no play in the hitch/receiver.

Mine is mounted on 2" sign post square and slides in a hitch. I just grab the wrench handle and stand up, the truck isn't going anywhere and I've not had an issue with any.
