Re-barreling a Sauer 100

I have seen a lot of confusion about the possibility of rebarreling the Sauer 100.

I have a 100 Ceratech in 6.5 Creedmoor that is a mediocre shooter, so I decided to play around with it.

Yes, these barrels are threaded on and are removable.

With that said, it was not easy to spin off. It was much more difficult to unscrew than a Tikka or Cz rifle. Even after I broke torque, it would not spin off. It was very tight all the way to the last few threads. I had previously soaked it in oil, but perhaps a careful application of heat would have been better. It seems that there is some kind of thread locker on the threads.

I got impatient and broke out the pipe wrench to finish unscrewing it, so that made a mess of the original barrel shank. Even with all that, the threads were not damaged.

The barrel does not have a shoulder. The face of the barrel torques against a ring that the bolt lugs lock into.

The barrel tenon threads are very fine. I will follow up with the thread spec once I get a measurement.

The barrel also has a very deep counterbore that the bolt slides into. Similar to a Remington 700, but much deeper.

You might also have noticed in the pictures the stud that is used for an action bolt. Once the barrel is out, this stud can be removed from the reciever.

Does the ring that makes up the bolt lug recess have a way to index in the receiver or do you have to try and keep it lined up while you tighten the barrel?

That could be a nightmare if it doesnt. I don’t like that or the stud they use for an action bolt.

Thanks for posting these, I like to know the internal workings before buying new rifles.

The trigger group housing is plastic, but at least it is secured to the reciever by two screws.

The Sauer 100 was clearly designed for low cost manufacturing. The quality of workmanship is excellent, and it seems like Sauer can make a "budget rifle" that is superior in a lot of ways to competing designs. It would be interesting to compare the Sauer to a Winchester XPR side by side.

Thanks for posting this. The lug ring is an interesting design. Keep us posted on your new barrel install.

Will do. I have a 22 caliber blank, so I think it will be a 22 creedmoor. I also am considering a 6mm-284, but I don't know if I could get those to feed. Sauer 100 mags seem hard to find, I wonder if they are being discontinued?

I will probably just try 22 creed for now to keep things simple.

I messaged Jake w/eurooptic about Sauer mags. He said he will be getting more soon.

Checking several distributors, it looks like most are dropping the rifles and accompanying products like mags.

Thanks! I will look out for those. I guess I better stock up.

Does anybody know for sure if the Sauer 100 is being discontinued?

Jake also said in one of the Sauer sale posts that they are being discontinued and Eurooptic bought the closeout inventory for liquidation.
