I interviewed Mike Hudgins of Cooper Firearms about their current offering in a lightweight backcountry gun. This Model 54 in the six pound range for short action calibers is a sweet little gun and guaranteed to put 'em in a half-inch group at 100. Cooper is also working on a new gun that will be offered in long-action magnum calibers but landing in the six pound range later this year (hopefully). You can follow the discussion in this video

Enjoyed that, have far too many rifles now, but, would like a Cooper in 7mm Mashburn to side my pair of Dakota 76-.338s.

I have been VERY impressed with the Coopers I have handled to date, excellent workmanship and we have a great Cooper dealer here in Canada.

Any info. on a CRF model as I heard mentioned somewhere?

Axel, not sure what CRF means? What I do know is what Mike mentioned in the video. Cooper is working on a long-action lightweight gun around six pounds and with their accuracy guarantee of 1/2 MOA. Hope to see this gun in 2015.

Robby, what's the price look like for the non-magnum version? Any predictions or ideas on a price for the magnum?

Thanks Eagle,
I'll check with Cooper on the CRF and the prices mt100gr. Watch the thread.

Good morning gentleman,
So I will start with the CRF or a control round feed model. This CRF is in our new model 58 dangerous game model. It will be in the following caliber, 375 H&H, 416 Remington Magnum, 416 Rigby, 404 Jeffery, 458 Winchester Magnum, 458 Lott, and 505 Gibbs. At this point this is the only model that we have a controlled feed in.

As for the Model 54 short action light weight rifle that Robby and Mike are talking about in the video the starting price for the Excalibur is $2155.00 MSRP. We will not have a price on the magnum version of this rifle until they get further along in the R&D department. We are really trying to get this 6 LBS 1/2 MOA rifle out in 2015. That is the goal we have set. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to email me [email protected] or send me a message on Rokslide.com

I would LOVE to have a Cooper 58, synthetic handle, 4+1 capacity, prefer Echol's style mag box with the lack of a "Belly" and to weigh 9.5-9.75 scoped with a Leupy fixed power or small variable....for me, the .404 Jeffrey is the choice of chamberings.

I would also go nuts over a lighter, but, 4+1, version in .338WM, .358Norma, 9.3x62 and, especially, the superb 9.3x64 Brenneke......weight scoped as above, to about 8.5 lbs. in a synthetic and maybe an all stainless option?

I've had 5 Coopers, and still have two. Great rifles. I sold two to fund a custom long range rifle, then replaced one with another custom for my elk rifle. I could have saved a bunch and had just as accurate rifle in another Cooper. I've become spoiled on accurate rifles, and really like ultra lights, so one of these may find it's way to my house when they become available.

cobrad,

Have you read the about the New long Range Rifle that Cooper is building. Check out the thread on the Long range hunting forum. All the specs are listed below. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Model 52 Long Range Rifle features:

The Model 52 Long range rifle is designed and configured for the long range shooter. The entire design reduces felt recoil for faster sight picture recovery after the first shot and the new Cooper Muzzle break funnels gases away from the rifle to aid in shot placement visibility and follow up shots.
We are offering two standard stock styles: the Excalibur, which features a sporter style HS Precision stock, spiral fluted bolt and a straight fluted barrel made from 4140 Chrome moly.
The Jackson Hunter style stock features a Monte Carlo rollover cheek piece for better eye relief return as well as a 4140 chrome moly action and stainless steel barrel. We have increased the recoil lug size (.625) to create more action stiffness upon recoil. Our Model 52 action is sitting on an aluminum bedding block as well as glass bedded for greater accuracy.
You can choose from some of the most popular and accurate calibers currently available, 6.5x284, 280AI, 7mm REM MAG, 7mm STW, 300 WIN MAG, 338 WIN MAG, 7mm RUM, 300 RUM, 338 Lapua, 26 Nosler, and 28 Nosler.

Pricing:

Model 52 LR Excalibur (MSRP) $2755.00

Model 52 LR Jackson Hunter ( MSRP) $2755.00

What do you think your magnum version of this rifle will end up weighing?

Thanks!

I have a question for the Cooper rep
Why doesn't Cooper firearms build a 300wsm. And is that a possibility for the new magnum lightweight rifle.

Hello, We do not offer the WSM's for a variety of reasons. They are not setting the world on fire as far as sales and popularity, they will not fit in our standard short action rifle, & a royalty has to be paid on every rifle produced in those calibers that we do not wish to pay. If they were more popular perhaps we could find incentive to build them, but as it sits we do not offer them & have no plans to do so. Stay tuned on the light weight rifle though, its going to be a doozy!!

I am hoping for an update on the below:
"This Model 54 in the six pound range for short action calibers is a sweet little gun and guaranteed to put 'em in a half-inch group at 100. Cooper is also working on a new gun that will be offered in long-action magnum calibers but landing in the six pound range later this year"

Curious as to how it stacks up against something like the Kimber Montana / Ascents, Tikkas, etc..

The ultra light rifle we are working on is still in development and two prototypes are all but complete. Both will be going to the SHOT show in January. One is a 6.5x284 Norma & the other is a magnum (7mm Rem I believe). Both weigh under 6 pounds easily. We will likely begin accepting orders in January & then it would be the standard 6 month or so lead time. Personally, I'm pretty excited about it! We are going to be calling them the Model 92 which is it's weight in ounces.

NICE! What calibers will be available? Looking forward to seeing these!
