Considering a move to smokeless

Which can are you using?
SilencerCo Hybrid
Excuse my ignorance here but is this only for the savage ML or can you convert a savage CF to a ML using this kit?? It says you can use an axis but it’s kind of vague.
Any centerfire that uses the savage small shank barrel threads. For example I use mine on an American Rifle Company action however a buddy built his on a savage axis and replaced the bolt head with one specifically for holding the primer modules. In my case the ARC actions are control round feed so I just reach up and slip the module under the extractor then close the bolt.

Those barrels are available in Savage small or large shank options.

I built one of those cva conversions this year and don’t regret it for a second, put the Hankins ignition system in it and rolled. I’m shooting a 200gr bullet at 2750fps out of it. I’ll try to attach a picture of a 200 yard target and a couple groups I shot with it before season this fall.

Have you shot any BH through that can or just smokeless. If so what’s your BH velocity looking like and how is cleaning?

Mine is built on a stainless single shot 700 action. I ordered a barrel and breech plug from Hankins and had my gunsmith do all the machine work and cerakote. It was very reasonably priced. I also put together one for a friend starting with a bare 700 action and an Arrowhead remage barrel. Everything ready to shoot, including ramrod and bullets was about $2200.

Where did you source the actions and how much? I saw ptg offers them but I’ve read some scathing reviews

Cheapest-savage bolt gun donor with arrowhead or similar prefit, Remove spring loaded ejector

Best for the Money-CRF action with easy bolt release
Arrowhead or similar barrel (shouldered will take more pressure, but barrel nut barrels do pretty well) Bravo chassis
Remove ejector and put it in your safe.
Remove bolt, put priming module under extractor, replace bolt.

Are the axis actions an option?

For reference that’s a 26 inch omega (chassis) and a bergara wilderness SP they claim to have an 18 inch barrel but measures 16.5 without the brake. Woodman omega is my choice by a long shot. You can get a bolt gun with a super heavy barrel that will shoot higher charges but for me that’s not super important.

Where did you get a chassis to fit the omega!?

I honestly don't know. I have never looked into what the tenon print is for an axis. If it is the same as a model 10 then they should work just fine. If you have a gunsmith do a shouldered prefit it won't matter either.

Quick group off picnic table and gamechanger bag at 300 yards: 72 grains IMR-4198 by weight, fed 215 primer, three different settings on the Swinglock die on 275 grain Fury caused varying loading pressure but that didn't seem to matter.

The rifle has a Pure Precision Summit muzzy action and Altitude stock, 22" Brux 45 cal with muzzle brake, Hankins ignition system with aluminum alloy modules.

Last year the 14th shot on this rifle smoked a doe whitetail at 346 yards.

I started the smokeless journey with a Remington 700ML action and 209 ignition which worked well but as mentioned above, you really have to stay ahead of the primer fouling in the flame channel before the vent liner.

Edit to add: I'll be switching to Arrowhead NSR bullets when these Fury run out. So much easier than dinking with swaging for proper bore fit. Especially when you have the Swinglock with a chunk of your barrel that engraves the rifling on bullet jacket. I built a special tool to grip and index the bullet to the rifling through the muzzle brake but its a pain compared to NSR (no sizing required) bullets.

I went with smooth sizing. Didn’t want to mess with the indexing and many seem to have gone away from that. Arrowhead isn’t offering NSR’s for the 40’s though. Sizing even .0001” differently can definitely cause large ish pressure/velocity changes. These things are picky. For long range you need to size consistently to keep from having drop changes at longer ranges.

Oh! I’ll add that different bullet lots can size differently. I found that out switching to a new lot, sized and went to the range without measuring bullet diameter. Velocity was off a fair amount. What the hell now? Pulled out the 10ths mic and there it was, .0002” diff diameter with the same setting on the die. I knew better than to not check but got in a hurry.
