Hi All,

Hope this is ok to post here - I’m traveling in the Black Hills this week for work, got to my hotel room in Deadwood, looked outside and saw a band of sheep. I’ve always loved watching sheep, but never actually spent any time trying to determine if they were legal.

I have a whole new respect for those of you able to determine if a ram is legal at distance! I’m probably 125 yds away looking through an iPhone camera and my novice eyes don’t really know what they are looking at haha.

In your opinions, are any of these rams legal?

Haha I agree on that! I haven’t even looked if SD has a lottery system for tags. I was more wondering on the full curl aspect.

Not a sheep expert but if you are in SD and assuming they are all rams then they are all legal. I believe SD doesn’t have a horn length/curl requirement. I believe there are a couple states that have 3/4 curl but no lower 48 states have a full curl requirement. Alaska has a full curl/8 year old requirement for Dall.

Per Alberta 4/5 regs the broadside ram in 2nd pic looks legal, not a perfect angle however. Not an old ram either. 3rd pic ram could also be legal but needs a better look. Also looks older possibly. None will make full curl by any standard.

In Montana, looking at the broadside of the animal, you draw a line from the front most point of the base of the horn, through the back most point of the eye, and see if it intersects any point of the horn curl. if it does, it is legal.
