Colorado SB25-003 AWB 2025

It’s so sleazy. Trampling rights juuuuust as much as they think the a get away with before recalls or fuel for the opposition to your presidential hopes. They’ve got the votes and desire to pass a ban/surrender bill but no intestinal fortitude. Cowards.

Also, HB 24-1348 is listed on the 2025 Big Game Brochure (look at New for 2025 on the front cover). It refers to firearms left in unattended vehicles. It states that handguns must be in a hard locked case if left in an unattended vehicle. Firearms that are not handguns (rifles, shotguns), must be in a LOCKED hard sided or soft sided case, and the firearm must also have a lock on the firearm itself.
You've misread the law fyi. If a rifle is in a locked hard side case it does not require a firearm lock also, that provision is for soft sided cases.

However "hunting" is an exception but what are the boundaries involved when "hunting"? Is it door to door, at the trail head, what??? Its a stupidly vague law.

Thanks for the correction. I reread it, and you are correct, you only have to have the lock on the "non handgun" if it is in a soft case. I stand corrected. Thanks again! I edited my original post to reflect correct information.

For those of you looking for an easy button. At a minimum, Open Chat GPT and ask it to "write an email with strong opposition to CO SB25-003". Modify it to your likings and hit send.

I'm always amused at comments like "you let too many liberals" etc... Come on, it's not like there are border check points at the state line. People get to live where they want. It's just unfortunate that the balance in Colorado has swung the way it has and the result is passage of bills like these.

True you almost need to have openly hostile policies though to deter those who like to show up to mostly free places and make a boat load of rules… Like they are currently making for those who like to hunt, fish, enjoy firearms

SB 25-003 defunds wildlife and CPW

Cross posting from other thread. This is no longer a gun owner issue, this is a direct threat to hunters, anglers, parks users, hikers, bikers, campers, wildlife watchers, etc.

Colorado SB 25-003 bans semi-automatic firearms that accept detachable magazines. An amendment to the bill created a carve out where individuals could purchase the above banned firearms by acquiring a FOID, which requires a class administered by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

According to the Fiscal Note on SB 25-003- Technical Note, “The Firearms Training and Safety Course Cash Fund is intended to cover costs for the CPW to administer the records system. However, it will not have sufficient revenue in FY 2025-26 to cover these costs. The fiscal note assumes an appropriation from the Wildlife Cash Fund to the DNR, although uses of the Wildlife Cash Fund in the CPW are limited by statute, which would need to be amended to allow this cash fund to pay for costs associated with the bill. Without an amendment, another funding source would need to be identified.”

The Wildlife Cash Fund is paid for by hunters, anglers, and parks users. It is used to support wildlife habitat, public access, and wildlife-related recreation. It cannot and should not be used to fund firearms licensing, particularly semi-automatic firearms with detachable magazines. During the CPW Commission meeting this week, Director Davis and numerous Commissioners called out serious budget concerns funding critical CPW wildlife programs. Why would Colorado politicians divert funds from vital wildlife programs to fund firearm licensing? Why should hunters, anglers, hikers, bikers, campers, and birdwatchers have to take on the financial burden of licensing semi-automatic firearms with detachable magazines? SB 25-003 violates statute regarding appropriate use of the Wildlife Cash Fund and Colorado wildlife are too important in this current environment. This bill should be tabled or sent back to the original sponsors and committee.

SB 25-003 is scheduled for the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, March 11th. Would love to see the wildlife conservation community speak out against it with a singular voice.

Spoke to a warden friend, he is in the process of moving himself and his family to another state and taking on a job in their parks/wildlife. His views of the current state of CPW, anti-hunting interests hijacking policies and committee members and the relentless stripping of 2A rights has him tossing in the towel.

He said it’s infected every aspect of the CPW. Spoke about how the degradation of hunting, funding, projects and their ability to do their job will only continue to go downhill.

Said this AWB and the recent amendments are gonna be a bad bad deal, affecting outdoorsmen way past just infringing on their 2A rights.

It was an incredibly bleak conversation. Makes me ready to burn all my points however I can and say goodbye to CO hunting.

That’s a shame man, this strain of progressivism is literal cancer for our state…

Yeah I’m about cooked. Lived here for 10 years. Have gone to multiple hearings, attended rallies at the capital, put in tons of time advocating for hunting and 2A rights and feel I have helped to fight the good fight.

I’ve always felt living in Colorado was a privilege not to be squandered or disrespected. Ironically it seems so many have come from other states to do exactly that. Disrespect and spit in the face of what Colorado used to be and what it stood for. Just progressives that have failed at minding their own business.

I would be lying if I wasn’t discouraged to the core and ready to pack it up and toss my CO residency in the trash. Feels like a losing battle when the left views you as scum and willing to trample on your rights out of spite.

It’s a shame. One of the redeeming qualities that keeps me going is the professionals at the ground level with CPW. They have always impressed me. I was hoping some of the senior folks at CPW or DNR would speak out about SB 25-003 illegally diverting funds from wildlife programs.
