That should be a super engaging hunt in difficult, dramatic and very BIG terrain.
If you have the time this summer and can arrange for the logistics, I'd strongly consider doing a high route traverse of the Sangre De Cristo range. You don't need necessarily need to do the entire ~120 miles -maybe just keep it focused on the prime sheep country and you could break it up into legs if need be. That will give you all of the intel you could possibly obtain and get prepare you for the physical realities of this hunt better than anything else. It would also be an awesome traverse unto itself. There a few blogs out there documenting this traverse in a non hunting manner. Obviously, you need more time than a thru hiker, but, with so many time consuming perpendicular access points, a traverse would be the best bang for your buck scouting trip.
