Won a CO RMBH Tag of a Lifetime... Now What

Congrats on the tag, pretty special to win that. Theres a group of guys in colorado who seem to know where all the biggest rams in the state are. If i had that tag and was after the biggest ram i would reach out to Trey Milhoan from Capra Guides. His network seems to find and kill the biggest rams the state has to offer. I dont know him personally but follow on social media. Good luck!
This seems to be a consistent name I've heard, got connected to Trey through another buddy and have reached out to him. Thanks!

You can use your bow on one of those late rut hunts with NO other hunters around. I’d concentrate on November and December if I had that tag. I’d spend some time in August too up in the high country too just because it is so awesome. There was a hushed grumble in the crowd when the location of the winner was disclosed 😂

This sounds like a horrible problem to have, I'll pm you my info and you can just turn the license over to me...

Congratulations, I look forward to seeing how things turn out for you!

If it's any consolation, we just moved from CO to TX for some childcare help. I figured that would had gotten some side eyes as you had both the sheep and goat tags go to current TX and CA resident...

I’m happy for you man, I’m from Michigan…I think the groan was more because it wasn’t someone in the room 😉

I hunted the entire archery season in 2007 with my recurve and was close but no cigar. No regrets. Enjoy that tag to the fullest, don’t get sidelined by score would be the best advice I could give.

How much in savings or home equity do you have? S79 has the biggest rams in the state for a heavy trespass fee.
I never had any desire to hunt sheep until I started bowhunting. And then I saw some of the rams on a family friend's ranch in that unit, and started applying for points. At that time that whole area wasn't even "a unit". I had to apply elsewhere, and eventually drew a different tag. Wouldn't have mattered though, that family ended up selling the ranch.

I’d think anyone that has held a sheep tag can appreciate the feelings of wanting a really good ram but I wouldn’t get hung up on it. Go hunt. Have fun. Kill a ram that YOU will be happy with, and take lots of pictures. Congratulations! You’ll get your ram.

Congrats and look forward to seeing you at our Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society Meet & Greet on June 21st in Golden, Colo. Some awesome sheep experts will be on hand to help you get rolling. If you need some swarovski optics the RMBS is a dealer and can get you great pricing while supporting our mission to put more sheep on the mountain.

If want to see me calling out your name at the Bighorn Society Rendezvous for the win it is on FB here: just skip to the 8:45 minute mark.

And before I get blasted for stating a specific unit, this is like saying there are huge bucks on Antelope Island.
top three rams in unit killed last year ON PUBLIC LAND despite Jimmy John paying the six figure fee for pvt he killed where the public land hunters killed. Two killed by women hunters who used the same shared weapon weeks apart, which was cool

I’ve talked to a lot of folks in the last week, multiple of whom are on this thread. First off, thank you all for the insight and willingness to share info. The sheep community is unique, what a supportive group of folks who all want to see you be successful.

Looking forward to the meet and greet and getting some eyes on some sheep this summer.

That's the goal, enjoying every second of this process.
What I've been told so far, the tag is good for any unit that's open and you have to follow weapon regs for that unit but it's fair game across the state from when the season opens to when it closes.
I'm not sure if you're going guided or not, but if you are limited on time, there is no doubt about it that mid November to mid December is when I would spend most of my vacation days if limited. From my experience the rut for sheep is worse on big rams than MD. If there is a big ram around, he will show up and you can monitor ewe groups to see what happens. This would be especially true in units that border non hunting areas, like RMNP etc. Those big rams will travel huge distances, and they will find the ewes. They are old, and it's not their first time down into those annual ewe groups.

Sandbrew above is very involved in the sheep community locally, and has a large network. I'm sure his past involvement with the community is a huge + to him (rightly so) but I wouldn't expect much from the local guides for free. Maybe I'm out to lunch, but maybe not. I'd definitely show up to that sheep and goat seminar for no other reason to network. It's a long season, huge opportunity and I'd treat it like hunting whitetails. Sure you can kill a good one early if you have the intel on a nice buck, but November on is when it will get really good, and rams can be really stupid for us archers.
