LOL, I think it's all in what you practice for. Most of us go to the range and shoot off a rest, and maybe some off hand shots but not much.
I do the same thing, but what I remember is when hunting with the older members of my family as a young kid, some of who served in World War II, I found they could make off hand shots like they were nothing.
They made those shots enough to show me it was not a fluke, and I missed them enough to know my limitations in most situations.
Just spotted a good buck. 28 wide 4 pt. Good fronts and weak backs. Got some video for tonight if I don't shoot him. mid 170s...really tempting. Still debating on him.
He's bedded now with about 5 does in thick oakbrush. 500 yards away. Starting to snow again. I'm shivering so bad I can't hold my binoculars still. I need one More look before I Decide
I'm not there, but I will say that this is where fog can be a hunters ally. They can't see through it any better than we can so I've been able to stalk through the wide open on bucks with the fog. Hopefully it's working in your favor. Seems like if I'm patient, it usually lifts at some point, even for just a minute...
Ok sorry for the delay battery was wet and low charge.
Passed the28 incher cause I saw a hog. Proabably 200+. He's is in thick thick oakbrush. Only see glimpses. Tracking and bumping his does but haven't seen him in a while. Over 8 inches of snow. 100 yrd visibility.
He called me. He indeed saw a toad of a buck. Said he thought he got a few seconds of video! Buck got away for today, but he'll be back out after it in the morning. So like me, you all have to spend your Saturday night hitting "refresh".
