I am just passing this along from another forum lets make sure that our voices are heard!

The CO CPW is planning to adopt one of two alternative resolutions regarding wolf reintroduction in Colorado. The meeting is this Wednesday, January 13th. The pro-wolf people, in-state and nationally (Defenders of Wildlife among them) are rallying hard, flooding the CPW with emails, and planning to have "hundreds" of supporters at the meeting.

Pro-hunting groups will also be represented, but we are likely to be outnumbered. The pro-wolf people are going at this very hard, may be bussing people in from Boulder. There is a thread on this on the Bowsite CO forum, too.

The alternatives are shown below. If you ever want to hunt big game in CO, this is a HUGE issue. The best alternative for hunters is Alternative 2.

Please send emails to the CPW at [email protected] This is an important step in delaying or prohibiting the reintroduction. The pro-wolf people are all over this. We need the help of hunters!

_________________________________________________________

Original version: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission affirms its support of the Wolf Working Group’s recommendations adopted by the Wildlife Commission in May 2005 and hereby opposes any introduction of Mexican or intentional reintroduction of gray wolves in the State of Colorado.

Alternative Version 1: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission affirms its support of the Wolf Working Group’s recommendations adopted by the Wildlife Commission in May 2005, recommends that Mexican wolf recovery efforts be confined to the subspecies’ historic range, and emphasizes the importance of bi-national recovery planning with Mexico.

Alternative Version 2: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission affirms its support of the Wolf Working Group’s recommendations adopted by the Wildlife Commission in May 2005, opposes the intentional release of any wolves into Colorado, recommends that Mexican wolf recovery efforts be confined to the subspecies’ historic range, and emphasizes the importance of bi- national recovery planning with Mexico.

What a load of crap and obvious attack at hunting. Here is my response:

Commissioners,

I am a resident of Pennsylvania who has backpacked, hunted for elk, fished for trout, and generally enjoyed nature in the great state of Colorado and plan to again in the future. I am writing to express my support for Option 2 of the wolf working group’s proposals. The Cervidae species of Colorado face enough difficulty due to the habitat fragmentation created by the transplantation of invasive Homo sapiens from California. I implore you to preserve the future of hunting and the natural beauty of your great state by rejecting the irrational proposals to transplant the Canadian subspecies of Canas lupis.

Although I am no biologist, the statistical and anecdotal data from Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho conclusively supports that populations would be reduced even more dramatically by transplanting the non-native Canadian Grey Wolf. I fully support the habitat projects to restore the native Mexican Grey Wolf to their native range included in option 2 of the proposals.

Finally, at this point in history we may as well address the real issue at hand here. It is fully evident that the primary intention of the most vocal pro-wolf introduction groups is to erode support for hunting by transplanting this non-native predator thereby reducing huntable game populations. We as hunters are unified and prepared to vigorously battle this Trojan horse tactic to destroy our lifestyle which is permanently engrained in the human DNA.

Do you know where the meeting will take place? I'm not in CO currently, but I know many respectful and thoughtful hunters in Denver that would be good assets to counterbalance the other side. This is less about hunting to me and more about management plans based in biology as opposed to emotion (I know it's hugely related to hunting, but that's not the direction I like to argue).

They shove the pest down our throats plan is a done deal I can assure you. Obama's greens are going to be paid before he leaves office.

Hate to say it, but this is probably already a done deal. The wolf groups are pretty well funded and coached and a group of hunters going in and being confrontational is exactly what they want to happen.

Do the state Game and fish Departments have to participate in a reintroduction program to get federal funding for management?

I would really push to reinstate a Trapping season at that meeting ;)

Do whatever you can to not have wolves. It has changed the dynamics in Montana forever. In northwest Montana, it has ruined the elk hunting and even had drastic effects on the deer herds. We had a winter die-off 5-7 years ago and it has slowed the recovery of both elk and deer. We still don't have a good age structure in our whitetails. I would do some research with respect to how much revenue has been lost in states like Montana and Idaho from a reduction of non-resident hunters. Also, look at the reduction in herd numbers of the Yellowstone elk herds. If you think it won't hurt your numbers, I wouldn't count on it. Good luck with the battle.

This is a complete 180 from where they were just a few months ago when CPW had a strongly worded statement against wolves. Something smells...

DOW adopted Version 2. Regardless, wolves are already here, just not in large numbers. Yet.

VIA RMEF

"Breaking: The Colorado Parks and Wildlife commission voted 7-4 in favor for Alternative 2 regarding wolf introduction (aka opposes the intentional release of any wolves into Colorado, recommends that Mexican wolf recovery efforts be confined to the subspecies’ historic range, and emphasizes the importance of bi-national recovery planning with Mexico.)
Thanks to all RMEF members, sportsmen and women who commented."

Amazing that they let an op Ed in that has incomplete statements! He whiffed on the Rob. Pit. Act and to fully explain how state wildlife agencies are funded through licenses and tags.
