I wish there was a way for them to show what tags are Leftover and which ones are Returned. The antelope unit I hunt with my uncle used to be a reliable draw. We would always put in 1st choice buck and 2nd choice doe and every other year we would draw a buck tag and get doe tags on the off years. A few years ago they cut tags back and you need 2pts to get a buck tag and you couldn't get a doe tag as a 2nd choice.

This year there are 3 leftover buck tags and a whole bunch of does.... I wish I knew if these were returns or true leftovers.

Look at the draw recap and you can find out.

They should be refunding money for turned in tags before they start selling them again. I have yet to receive my refund for the tag I returned.

That's OK. I still haven't received mine or my two daughter's refunds for our late season cow tags we turned back in last year a week before the season started. Not really expecting those to show up anytime soon.

I spent a half hour talking to the DOW a week ago about this.

The real problem is big point holders drawing these tags then returning them with no consequences and then the tags just went into the abyss...( Until this year those tags that got returned were not re-issued. )

Now they are re-selling the tags with the leftover tags. If you draw a tag (1st Choice) you should loose your points unless you can document an unusual circumstance.

My thoughts is that is your purchase a leftover tag that requires more than 5 points R or NR you should loose your points.

Either way the system is broken and this year will be a zoo......

I'm glad I burned my points to go hunting this year and I don't have to worry about stressing over this lol

Personally re-issuing these returned tags is great for all of the sportsmen and women. I don't see why people are complaining.

The reason I called was I wanted to check and see about the exchange option for my tag in place of one of these great leftovers (Worth a try) .

Just returned from waiting in line and didn't even get to the counter before they sold out and I was only looking for a doe tag that had like 150 tags. I didn't even think they'd have primo tags in the leftover drawing. Their system this year is certainly not fair for those that have waited years and didn't draw only to find out they have those tags in the leftover drawing that people will get with no point loss. I believe some states will actually call the next person that applied once a high point tag is turned in. Guess we'll see if they change their process again next year once people start complaining!

The problem I see is that if there were let's say 6 leftover tags now for a unit, and all six of those guys got their points back......now next year there are 6 more guys in the pool for tags that wouldn't have been, and 6 guys hunting it without using any points. That's going to cause even more point creep than we had before.

I think that without some sort of emergency circumstances, they should lose their points regardless.

I completely forgot to even try, I think it is great they did this instead of just tearing up the licenses like they did in the past. There is now more opportunity to get a great tag and no it will not change point creep. If anything guys that are lucky may not go back but even if they did have enough points they would still probably apply for the same tags either way.

The guys that return their tags should lose a point not including the point already lost when drawing the tag.

Small little town and we were the only people who showed up for the leftover licenses. Lucked out with an archery elk and pronghorn and dad got an archery elk tag as well. Figured I had a good chance at getting the elk tags because there were 8 available but figured I had no chance on the pronghorn. There was only 1 tag available and I ended up being the lucky one!! Saved us 6 years worth of points on elk. It's been a great morning haha!!

You do lose your points unless you let them keep your money. I know. I had to turn in a 53 01A due to shoulder surgery and I lost my points because I wanted a refund. I hope who ever got that tag has a great time.

I think it is good that somebody gets them but it seems more fair to contact those that just missed drawing like some states do. Technically, the current system does impact point creep as opposed to selling those tags to whoever applied but didn't draw and were "next in line". As it is, someone with big points could draw the same tag 2 years in a row if they got in line early and were lucky to draw a coveted leftover and had big points. It does seem like those that turn in highly sought after tags should have some sort of penalty without extenuating circumstances. For instance a guy in line this morning had to turn in a 201 elk tag because he has to have back surgery. DOW seems to take the approach of making more money and not caring much about who gets the tag since the tag most likely will be paid for twice (assuming the people that returned them opted to get points back and forgo the tag fee.) I don't have a dog in the fight but it seems like they should be more fair to those that have waited much longer than a few hours in line! Just my 2 cents!

Certainly a flawed system. But at least people had an opportunity. That more than we can say than what has happened in the past.
