My wife drew a cow moose tag here in Colorado. Plan to use “our” 300 Win Mag and looking to get round recommendations. She’s no stranger to taking animals with this rifle but moose is a first for both of us. Furthest distance will be 300yds.

We have a few 180gr rounds that this rifle shoots well; will that be enough or do we need punch up closer to 200gr? Or is the bullet more important than weight? Any real world advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

last year took a Moose with my 300win mag with a 200gr Federal terminal assent was very happy with performance and accuracy one shot kill at 165 yds
this was my largest and first animal with that bullet and have sense switched my 7PRC and 6.5PRC to them
and taken multiple whitetail deer as far out as 420 yds

180 grains is sufficient on a moose. I've taken a few back in the day with 180 grain Federal and Corelokt soft points, and although they did the job, I would not recommend them. I've since gone to Partitions, and finally settled on Barnes ttsx. A bullet designed for deep penetration placed in the vitals will make for a short tracking job, and that is very important given that moose are often in close proximity to water.

I used 185 Berger Classics last year and the cow dropped in her tracks. Partitions is another good option. A 300 WM loaded with a 180-200 grain bullet is more than sufficient.

A lot of guys here like match bullets but they can be messy in bigger/faster cartridges. A moose (at least in Alaska) had quite a bit of meat on the ribs. I hate to loose that. So I might consider something like a 200 gr Partition or Swift A Frame. Either will work, they will make a good hole, but probably not as messy as a ELDX or something like that. Just a thought.

We use 22 Creeds and 6.5 Creeds down here on "giant" Gila cow elk. No drama, no rodeos. I suggest using whatever cartridge you have that recoils the least. I would not put my wife behind a 300WM.

What load do you usually shoot in it? A 300 win mag is a classic moose cartridge and a 180 grain bullet placed were we should will be enough.
Are you loading your own or shooting factory? I am a fan of partitions and bonded bullets but I'd worry more about accuracy.

My wife would kick me in the shin if I had her shoot a 300 Mag. A .270 or 7-08 would be more than plenty. If forced to hand her a .300, I’d download it to 30-06 levels with 165gr Partitions.

Good luck either way. Moose is tasty.

Thanks for the feedback. Have experienced ELDX getting messy on a deer, so good point there on the rib meat.

I’ll take a look at the Berger Classics and see how those shoot. I appreciate the feedback.

Shooting factory. Mostly FP Trophy Bonded for 180. Haven’t shot partitions but getting a lot of feedback about those so going to see how those shoot.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m seeing a lot of feedback about partitions, but I’ve also shot deer with TTSX in 150 so that may be the ticket.

Do you have another smaller caliber rifle for her to use, my wife shoots a 7mm-08? If not id go with the 150ttsx or even the 130ttsx and you will get better than the 270 numbers. I am getting 3100fps with the 130’s out of my .308 and she is getting 3100 with 120ttsx out of her 7-08

Any bullet that shoots well out of your 300 win mag is more than enough medicine for a moose. They are big but not tuff. Based on two bulls and three cows I have killed mostly with a bow. Don’t waste your time overthinking weapon.
