I have an older Browning A-Bolt (serial number suggests 1993) in 300 win mag. Looking for ammo recommendations for elk rounds. Trying to minimize buying 5 boxes of $60+ shells. 26" barrel with 1 in 10" twist. Also has a muzzle brake. Not looking at anything long distance. Cheap federal shells were shooting an inch at 100 yards while sighting in scope. Thinking about trying the federal premium trophy bonded 180 grain first, then the 200 grain terminal ascents. if neither work, the nosler trophy 180 grain accubonds.

A better trigger spring and recoil pad were also well worth the $$ on mine.

Since you are buying anyways and it's the bullet that does the killing, I'd opt for the 195 ELD Match ammo. Its a very hard to beat factory ammo for the 300wm. That said, I've seen them die quickly with literally anything/everything even (150gr copper) so maybe it's worth it to you to save a few dollars.

Thanks. I have some 165 grain federal premiums left over from a mule deer hunt I can try first.
One of my factory 300 WM shoots 150s and 165s the best so that’s what I stick to. Tried 180s and they definitely open up.

I wouldn’t worry too much about velocity or energy with a 300. Plenty of elk have been taken with a 308 with the same bullets going much slower.

I would start with Federal Premium in factory ammo. I have never had a Nosler Partition fail on a big game animal.

I think federal fusions are a pretty good middle of the road option. Powershoks will work well too. No need to overthink this. People have been killing stuff very dead with corelokts and interlocks for a long long time

My dad has a 1992 or 1993 model A-Bolt stainless and it shoots the Federal Premium 180gr Swift Scirocco II ammo really well. It didn’t like the 178 or 200gr Hornady Precision Hunter at all though.

The Sciroccos seem like a good elk bullet? Don’t have a ton of experience with them. I’d like to stick to a 180 grain but will shoot whatever is most accurate that’s not a thin walled match bullet.

100% agree. Maybe I’ll look at 165s and 150s before going to the 200s. Thanks for your input!

Any recommendations on the trigger spring? Good idea on the recoil pad too. I could use a little increase in my length of pull.

You think the match ammo would get the penetration needed for elk? I always thought match bullets were thin walled and had unpredictable expansion. But I’m pretty new to all this!
