Cheap Stuff that Works

I own the Hood as well and really like the dressing of the separate hood and collar. The longer tail is nice too. I don't end up using it a ton these days mostly because I don't care for the fit through the torso. I'm 6'1" 180lbs and the size large fits everywhere else but is really baggy around the middle for me. I could probably cut out 6-8" of fabric for a better fit for me. I realize not everyone is shaped the same so if the fit works for you it's a solid piece. That said, the material itself isn't some magical fleece, so if you get it, do it for the features, not the material. Lots of cheaper fleece out there.

My wife and I recently made a climashield apex quilt out of 7.5 oz insulation. It was harder that I expected, but I spent about $75 total and am very happy with the result.

My Vaseline cotton balls are stored in these old timey film canisters. They use to hold rolls of film for ancient cameras. You usually had to wait months to see what was on the film, usually at least two major holidays and several birthdays, Back when you couldn't make a call or check your email with your camera. Back when a memory card was a 3x5 piece of paper with notes written on it, possibly in cursive which was another ancient form of written communication. ;)
And strange little cubes... could be inserted into sockets on that 110 film slim camera... which burst out light like the Sun! Probably a Magnesium Flash? Bright-White kinda spectrum to it.

5 days it's taken me to get thru this thread. My wife has told me I'm a dumb@$$ for spending so much time reading and going though all this. But the money I'm "Saving" just really made the list longer and she's not to impressed with me lol. First post here too. Man yall got a great thing going here! Love it!

I really enjoy the Wrangler Outdoor stretch pants. They use to be cheaper but are still around $26. I use them nearly all season long, they're perfect for summer scouting, and early archery seasons. I run them with a merino bottom well into October and stay plenty warm. They are lightweight, dry fast, and move well with your body

I picked up a USMC issued goretex bivy sack for cheap. Packs down to about the size of a nalgene.
These are a completely underrated piece of kit. No more wet bags from the outside, and they add a decent amount of warmth as well.

Also, if you get the green and black bags with it, it’s supposedly rated to -40F.

I’ve often considered those.
Any idea on what they weigh? Thanks.

Victorinox Swiss Army Hunter. I've taken a lot of deer, elk and pronghorns with just that knife. Easy to sharpen, too. The old traditional red one or the new orange one, both work.

The whole system (bivy, green bag, black bag)? Or just the bivy sac?

If you’re going UL, I wouldn’t pack the whole system. Hell, even just the bivy and black bag takes up ALOT of room.

But, just the bivy rolls up to about the size of a stuff sack for you whole bag. <1 lb if I had to guess. Works great to keep a nice, compressible down bag dry while you fog your tent up with your breath. It’ll also work just fine if you want to roll with just the bivy, no shelter, but then you wont have cover from the weather outside your sleeping system.

TLDR: the whole system is awesome. But I wouldn’t backpack hunt with all of it. Just take the bivy and cover up a more compressible bag with similar temp rating and you’ll be alright.

I was curious about the weight of just the bivy.
Thinking about keeping condensation off a bag in a tent or skip the tent all together. Thanks.

I have never taken anything larger than a hog with a knife. Very impressive!

I know you meant that you have taken them apart with just that knife... just couldn't resist!
