I picked up a USMC issued goretex bivy sack for cheap. Packs down to about the size of a nalgene.

These are awesome. Every time Ive looked for them they seem to be quite pricey on eBay. Any other direction on finding one for cheap?

I was curious about the weight of just the bivy.
Thinking about keeping condensation off a bag in a tent or skip the tent all together. Thanks.

Consider using just the bivy and tent fly to save on space and weight. Also, the bivy can help retain body heat so a lighter weight sleeping bag may also be a good option depending on conditions.

I have two of the US Army goretex bivy's , they weigh right around two pounds. Like most surplus gear really tough and heavy. I have used one a fair bit, but do not carry it when backpack hunting.

Yes, agree, big fan of these.

And I have 3 of them…bought two with the sleeping bag combo for around $125 and I bought my 3rd for about $30. Army Navy Surplus stores are the place to find them cheap.

@jmerc @Grassymike @fjefman you don’t have issues with condensation inside the bivvy with this setup? I would think it would trap moisture from your body. What sort of conditions are you doing this in?

You will always end up with a certain amount of condensation in a bivy, just a fact of life. I have used mine in summer scouting trips mostly. Condensation is not a big deal in fair weather when you can air out your bag during the day. I use a tarp or Silex for shelter on my backpack hunts usually 9-10 day duration. I purchased a light breathable bivy (not waterproof on top) just to use as a ground sheet and envelope to keep me my bag and pad together under a tarp.
I have also used a bivy in fall weather standalone. It is awesome to fall asleep under the stars and wake up and see how far they have rotated in the night sky. Again decent weather with couple nights of light rain, air out my down bag in the sun durig the day.

-Military surplus cold weather boots. Aka “Mickey Mouse boots,” aka Vapor Barrier boots. For extreme cold Static hunting or ice fishing I haven’t found better. Edit: you can find pairs for less than $50

In addition, The Peckham Polartec polyester fleece 1/2 zip only weights 9.5 oz in small I would say it is great as an layering option to keep you warm and super cheap

On my kitchen scale it weighs in at 9.3 oz. I got the integral designs tarp on FB Marketplace for $10, it’s the Silwing model, weighs 12.4oz 14.6 with the pegs. Not a bad set up for under $50 at 1.5lbs. I already carry trekking poles all the time anyways.
