Longer bars will help keep the weekend hack from walking into the bar and spending some time in the emergency room.

Buy chaps and wear them.

My brother on one of our last logging jobs.

I run husky's and have had NO problems with them whatsoever. We heat strictly with wood---about 4 cords a year----so I put them to good use as well as using them around the ranch. Highly recommend them.

Stihl MS 390 with 2 foot bar has met all my needs for 8 years. Its within your price range and always starts within 30 seconds with no problems. I have used it felling and bucking trees every spring, summer, and fall (probably 30-45 days a year) . Love this saw !

I've had great luck with Husqys. My little 350 I bought from lowes probably 8 years ago has never missed a beat. The 346 and 372 are a perfect combo for a small and big professional grade saws. My boss has a husqy weedeater he said he has been running for 28 years. I have a sthil weedeater a lawn care guy used every day of grass season for three years and it still works perfect.

Dittos Wapitibob. I can still remember looking at log trucks next to me on HWY 140 going to the mill with one section of a log that if it would have rolled off it would have crushed my little 66 Chevy truck and me inside it like a bug. When I was logging I used a Jonsered and now run a Stihl. Not a logging saw just firewood saw. I remember my uncle complaining that when he threw a chain on his Huskey it put a hole in the gas tank. Not sure if that is a problem today but they make very good saws as well as Stihl. Bob.

It might of been mentioned and I just missed it but buy the brand of saw with the closest dealer. Both Stihl and Husqvarna are amazing saws and I know logging crews and tree services that use both. Whether you have a bar nut rattle off, need 2 stroke oil or files, having a dealer closeby to answer questions and provide quality service is a plus.

Edit:

I prefer Stihl. That is what all my jobs have had, and there is a dealer near buy. I would agree to get which ever brand has a dealer near by to you. Also get chaps and wear them. I always hear guys say they do not need them and then find out that they cut themselves. Even if you only fell smaller trees wear a hard hat. I know to many guys that have been hit by widow makers and phantoms.

Edit: Take a class, especially if you have never used a saw. Just swallow your pride, it is way better to learn the right way first than try to break bad habits. It will not take that long to learn. I teach inmates every day how to use them.

I am a Stihl guy as well, but grew up with a Husqy. Both will be fine IMO. The reason I run the stihl is what you are reading on here. I have a dealer close and the service is good. One thing about Stihl, is that they are only sold in dealers that are trained to service their product. You will not see Stihl sold at Lowe's or other stores. Find a good deal on a saw and get you one. I don't think you will be disappointed with either one.
