How does everyone carry a pistol while wearing chest waders? Need some advice on a better set up. Or advice on a smaller gun.

I carry a Glock 20 all the time. Love it to death. Carry's great on my hip when walking in the woods. Today was the first day trying to carry it with my waders on. I tried keeping it in the back pocket of my shoulder pack. It fit great and was secure and easy to get to, but the weight slung around my shoulder gave me a sore neck by the end of the day.

I'm considering carrying a lighter gun while fishing with waders on. I'm not too worried about four legged critters since black bears are the worst we have in PA and they don't worry me much. But there have been rare instances of sketchy bear encounters in PA. My biggest worry is running into a crazy methhead while walking back to the car on a back road or trail or some other 2 legged threat. If I was to carry something else, I'd sell my SR22 and buy one of 3 guns. It would need to be light enough to carry in my wader pocket, which is pretty large. All 3 would double for concealed carry too.

1. S&W Sd9ve or sd40ve. Cheap ammo, lightweight gun, not a lot of money. Not worried if it gets banged up.

2. Ruger LCRX 357, 3inch barrel. I've been wanting this gun to be made a long time now and they finally came out with it. 5 rounds of 357, only 7.5 inches in total length, and about 21 ounces. My dream carry revolver other than it holding only 5 instead of 6

3. Glock 29. Same ammo as my 20, but considerably smaller and lighter.

Final option: just throw my LCP2 in my pocket and be done with it.

Have you tried a Kenai chest holster for your 20? It’s an easy solution.

Haven't actually tried one yet but I've looked into them. I'm kinda on a tight budget though for now as I'm in my final semester of college but it's probably something I'll buy when I get the money. I know when I'm hunting I like a low riding hip holster so when I adjust layers I don't have to take my gun off every time. It might be the ticket for fishing however. Does the Kenai fit comfortably under a shoulder pack or even a bino harness? As long as it sits in the right place it would probably work just fine.

Yes it does.

I'll second that. My kenai chest holder is extremely comfortable both with and without a bino harness on underneath a pack.

I and my fishing buddy (who's on the river in deep coast range alone all the time) chose any one of the chest holsters - My logic tells me that IF I need to save myself with a pistol the chances are highest that I'll be grappling with a bear or lion and quite likely didn't see it coming which could mean I'm down with my hands/arms in a defensive position and drawing from the hip would be a big problem - As far as cartridge choices, at close range even a .22 mag with the right bullet choice would be good, as would .38 +P - My EDC is a 1911 so I chose a Charter Arms 5 shot 45acp just because that's what my Dillon is set up for - The Charter Arms has a newer design cylinder that while being slow to load also negates the needs for moon clips (and in a grappling or defense situation the likelihood of having to reload isn't great

I carry a full sized pistol most of the time but I also own a Kahr PM9. The PM9 is a very nice small pistol if you can shoot dao, my full sized are dao also so it works out well for me to have the striker fire dao Kahr. Extended mags increase the firepower offered by the PM9. Paired with a good pocket holster it is often a good option for me to have available.

if you're on a tight budget how could you consider replacing the gun vs getting the right rig? chest rig is all i use btw

I've been thinking about selling my SR22 to get an SD9VE. I know a guy I can trade it towards an SD9 and maybe pay $50 on my end. I guess I should have mentioned that if I got one of the other two guns, I'd waiting a year or two since they're more expensive. But again, I'd sell the SR22 and put the money towards the Glock or LCRX. But I won't sell a gun to buy a holster. I've sold a couple guns to buy binoculars, and I just can't bring myself to get rid of a gun again and not get another one back in return lol. If I buy the holster, it's going to be straight out of my pocket. I will buy it most likely sometime by the end of this summer, but as of right now it's not going to be an option until I get out of school.

You're not actually going to shoot a meth-head, ever.

Not planning on it lol. Just better safe than sorry. A few years ago two guys got in an argument during a drug deal on a back road. One guy shot the other guy and then cut his body up with a chainsaw, threw the parts in the creek and burned the car about a mile away. This was a creek that I fish from time to time and is only about 5 miles from my house. It would've been a very unfortunate evening to be fishing on that creek and run into that guy. Just saying crazy things happen. And sure, I've been a little paranoid since then.

Here's the story if you don't believe me...

Yeah I would've wanted more than a 380 if I was fishing there that night.

I carry a .500 in a Diamond D chest holster when I’m not carrying a shotgun on my back. A couple years ago I bought some zipper Simms waders, and that has made it much easier taking a leak without having to remove everything first.

DD chest holster is a good option. I have one for G 20 and my 500. You can wear it over a life jacket too! Chest bino harness is the only think that can be difficult as the both sit in the same spot.

The DD I have for my g20 can carry a spare mag.

Funny, when I first read this post it reminded me of the numerous posts I’ve read on various forums about “the right carry gun for the woods.”
From my own experiences in nearly six decades on this sphere, I’ve always felt safer in the woods (I’m certain most of the noises I heard at night while solo hunting were mice, possums or other harmless creatures) than while driving to the mountains or daily living in the city.....and I grew up a mile from Detroit city limits!
I still feel that way. I suppose if I was tromping through grizzly country more frequently, I’d have a much different outlook.
But after reading the article about the drug deal gone bad I totally understand how that could shape ones outlook!
