Well, not sure if it's worth updating as it seems the thread is dead...but the replacement barrel goes back today. They want one more chance to make it right. They asked for the action to go with it but I'm uncomfortable putting that in their hands. I've asked them to take .003 off the shoulder. If they do that the barrel will headspace out correctly. If they go too far, we'll have the same issue again but have to set the chamber back.

Both mine shoot great and threads look fine. Both a couple years old now. Didn’t bore scope them when new, but both broke in quick and clean easily. Both headspace about in the middle of spec.

I appreciate the update. Curious to see how they respond and take care of the problem.

I'll update you when the barrel gets back. They sent a call tag for next day air. It's already headed back my way. The explanation was thorough and they owned the first barrel. Gene said it's not salvageable and in the trash.

Glad to hear they have taken care of it without too much hassle and didn't take the McGowen approach.

the barrel arrived again today. strike 3 for carbon six in the competency department. i might still be able to use it but not for these guys incompetency. i just don't get it... we talked specifically about .003 coming off the shoulder to put it in spec. they said it already was in spec but it clearly was no where near the headspace of the first barrel which was a little tight but usable. this latest rendition is tighter than the first. instead of taking .003 off they doubled it and went for .006 . i honestly don't know if they meant to do this but that's what happened. now my stripped bolt won't close on the go gauge. like i said earlier, i might be able to use it still since i can get my reloads in there but it'll be tight and unreliable with factory ammo. originally i had expected to use factory loads but don't think i'll do that without checking that each one will load.

i'll email them back but WTF, how hard is it to dial a CNC machine? i get that setup takes some time but after two bad barrels and five shipping labels you'd think they'd want to get it right.

fwiw, i lived in baton rouge until i was 22. the people down there are good people that want to do right by you. all i can say is that they must not have the skill set i'd expect and a lack of quality control is killing their bottom line. when i go visit family back home i'd love to see how they take a barrel from threading to reaming and what they are doing to the throat to put those machine marks in there.

to all that are waiting on barrels, i wish you luck. check your headspace and don't look in the chamber if you don't want to know. from here on out i'll be back at bartlein or stick with the factory tikka barrels. both work just fine without all the headaches.

Have you asked to send your action to them so they can check headspace before they send it back? They are having to do that for a buddy of mine that had an issue with a weatherby prefit that won’t thread on

They did request the action but frankly I'm not interested in doing that. My local gunsmith or other trusted entities would be fine but these guys haven't demonstrated enough competence for me to trust them. I would likely get the barrel back with the action machined and I'm not interested in that. They're fairly poor with communication as well, which leads me believe they would complete work without authorization.

The bottom line is I offered to send the action and barrel to my LGS and they wanted the barrel back. If they would have taken off the requested three thou then we'd be good.

My first prefit from CarbonSix was a 223 barrel for my Howa Mini that I received in December--their first Howa Mini barrel produced for a customer. I was a bit nervous, but everything came out fine.

I ordered a second Howa Mini barrel in February, which I tried to cancel after seeing this SNAFU. It was already in the carbon wrapping stage, so I'll just ride it out and report back if I too encounter issues upon receipt and installation.

So it was tight before, you requested 3 thou more cut out, they cut out 6, and now it’s even tighter? Math is hard, but isn’t that going the opposite direction? What am I missing?

I know that feeling. Iv got a $1200 barrel sitting that will never get used because of this. If they will give you money back I’d cut your losses and run.

If you have a smith close by you trust us just order a blank and give him the business.

These threads make me happy I have always (except once) spent the extra $200 and had a good gunsmith chamber a blank fit perfectly to my specific action the first try

I think it’s the nature of the beast when trying to use a prefit on an action that was never designed for it. While I havnt had problems with PVA and tikka prefits, even they admit that there are occasionally issues.

Even smiths cutting it for your rifle can mess up, it’s just a lot more expensive.

Vet your gunsmith folks.

I'm in the same boat...was going to cancel but my barrel is being wrapped. If mine isn't right I'm just going to ask for a refund straightaway. I'm hoping I don't have to.

Looks like you're in Utah, any reason you don't get your money back and go with Preferred? They're down southeast of Hurricane, and I've heard good things as of late. They will spin the old barrel off and torque the new one on for you for like $75, and if it doesn't fit, they will spin up a new one right there. They have carbon fiber options.

Definitely so. I am no gunsmith but have talked to good ones that say tikka action tolerances can be as big as .006" on the headspace. Smiths definitely can mess it up as well, but as long as you have a good one you trust they'll likely not screw it up and if they do, they'll fix it.

Reading is hard too. Recheck my posts. The first barrel was tight. The second barrel was loose. Head space has a spec for a reason.

They're adamant they don't give refunds. We'll have to see how this last one shoots.
